I had my spare engine block cleaned up and some minor machining done. I thought I had a 200, but it's a 170.
What are some key factors with this engine? Am I losing alot of horsepower. Am I gaining gas mileage?
Your thoughts....Please...ZZ

They have less bore by 180 thou, and less stroke by 186 thou. What you loose in capacity, you gain in rev range, as the little Fords like to rev more. The little four bearing Fords are indestructable.

3.5 x 2.94 vs 3.68 x 3.126"

The capacity loss looses deep chunks of torque and some power. You'll have to rev it harder to keep up, and some updates will be needed in the gearing department to make up for what is a 17.5% capacity loss (2.781 liters verses 3.269 liters).

For straight line speed, go cubic inches. Or Turbo it!

8) stock for stock you are losing about 15 hp, but as xecute noted, the big thing is the loss of torque. as far as a mileage increase, at best 2mpg.

This is just my putt putt car. I'll hold my head high though. Thanx.
Another question. Can I put a 200 head on my 170?

You'll lose compression unless you have the head milled and/or the block decked to make up for the extra cc's in the combustion chamber. The thicker head gasket has to be taken into consideration also. I would not recommend using a 200 head on the 170.

3 days of posts have "gone away". I had forgotten about the dished piston of the 200 making the difference. I've been looking at a 250 head that I was going to be using on a 200 if I pull my 170 2spd. I've been reconsidering using my whole 250 instead, after seeing the larger chamber in the 250 head. I need a new radiator and want a 3spd auto, so I need to choose soon. Now that using the 170 head on the 200 is a possibility to think about, since I spent $350 on that head & my other 2 need work, I'm becoming confused.

If I wasn't so cheap and had 2 good eyes and could weld, I'd probably have a plan by now.
