Im pretty new to working on cars and have recently purchased a 66' mustang w/inline 6 200. Are there any books or things I could look up on the web that explain this car? Not so much body but the engine and tranny? Any help would be appreciated.

Oh..How can I tell if my autolite carb is meant for an automatic or manual trans?

thx.

Yeah, Ive got that one..I actually purchased it before I even got the car. Maybe I just need to read through it a little more thorough.

thx

the carbs for automatic equiped cars have a "dash pot" on both sides of the fuel bowl, the carbs for manual equiped cars only have one on the side closes to the valve cover. As far as I know the automatics have the second one to prevent stalling but I dont know why they would cause a problem in a car with a standard.

This is the outside (away from the valve cover) side of my buddy's '66 200 with 2.77 manual.

If you have any specific questions you need to have answered just ask, there is a good base of ford six knowledge hanging around this place.

My best suggestion to you is get a Ford Shop Manual for your car... that next to the Performance Handbook is the single best book in my garage.. it has everything for the car..... processes, specs, diagnostics, etc.... I have even loaned the book to machinists and mechanics working on the car... they don't even have that kind of information as easily available as a factory manual....

They are a bit pricey, at 60.00 I thought, but then again what price do you put on knowledge.... and I can tell you that it has paid for itself many times over in helping me get things right the first time....

I too knew nothing about the car when I bought it, although I do have a limited knowledge of I-6 engines....

But between that book, the handbook and this Forum you can find out almost anything....

Best of luck...

Oh yes, the shop manuals. To really understand your mustang, get the assembly manuals. I own half of them and they came in great use rebuilding my Mustang. Another book that is good is "How To Restore Your Mustang" its ok by me. Gives you an all around help and great for starters. I also found a Chilton book strictly on 1964-73 Mustangs and Cougars. Even though the inline 6 isn't too big in the book due to the popularity of V8s, its probably the best book i've used for maintenance.
