fuel pump problems

well when I got my car about 4.5 years ago I had to put a new pump on it. well I think it is gong out. I have a smell of gas when the car is running and now with 4 gallons in the tank I can't get it to fire or pump any gas. this is the new tank I welded up and I know it has 4 gallons in it because I just got done riding the 1 each way to teh gas station twice with a 2 gallon can. the tank holds 30 gallons and ran fine on sunday when I drove but has sat in the sun since and I figured I was low on gas (fumes) so whatever was in there prob got baked out in teh sun. if I dribble gas down the carb it will fire and run until it is dry. so being this pump is 4/5 years old AND has 40K on it could it have died on me? being a mexcio made pump I figure the quality is prob down and would not be suprised.

Sounds like quite a ride. Could you post a few pics?

Perhaps the diaphragm in the pump is failing or cracked. Have you had any unexplained rise in oil level or gas smell to your oil?.

well it got it running....

took the pump apart to look for a bad diaphram or anything like that. found a bunch of shavings from when I cut the filler neck hole in there. so cleaned them out and all is fine now (granted this took me all afternoon to figure out )
