Fuel System ??

After a very long trip to the Goodguys Nashville Nats in my 62 falcon I pulled the entire fuel system over the last 2 day. I had an offer from a relative to purchase a new tank, sending unit, and pump. I think the tank is salvageable, but hate to pass up the opp. for a new tank. Also seems like if I want increased capacity, 16 gal, then I won't have a drain plug, but it is considerable cheaper than the replacement 14 gal tanks from dennis carpenters or macs.

Any suggestions?

Yeah i would go for the bigger tank in for sure it' s nice to have a couple extra gals some times. If you want to put a drain plug do it before you put any fuel in it most welding shops or radiator shops could do that and than pressure test it. Also if it's a steel tank use some aircraft slushing compound to coat the inside of the tank and you will never have a rust problem. If it's a stainless than you don't need to worry about it.

Would anyone recommend to go with an electric fuel pump and convert the wipers to electric instead of having money in a mechanical fuel pump?

From experience driving the old Fords with Vacuum wipers they do work but not they are not the best sometimes. I guess it depends if your going to drive the car as a DD and your area of the country gets lots of rain. If so the electric wipers would be a good plan and could even be considered a safety issue, you could than use a fuel pump without the vacuum pump or go to an electric fuel pump too.

Right now I've pulled the whole fuel system, and was thinking an electric fuel pump would be about the same money as a mechanical and more efficient. I can deal without the wipers or just run them on vacuum for the time being

The 16 gal. fuel tank is available with the drain plug . Priced today at http://www.rockauto.com - SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # F28B [sedan , coupe , hardtop] - $83.79 + FG86A Sending Unit - $45.79 + S/H . That's what I put in mine about a year and a half back . On the wipers , have you considered adding a vacuum reservoir ? The aftermarket add-on ones are designed to hold enough to operate power brakes which ought to operate the wipers for a while . They range about 5"x7" , a cylinder , which could be tucked up under the dash out of sight .

Thank you for the information. I hadn't heard of Rock auto and didn't realize I could get it that cheap. I would be happy to go with a reservoir for the wipers and change the fuel pump to electric. Thank you for the advice :D

Decided to stick with original mechanical pump. Worked good so far, but did order a new mechanical carter from rock auto along with new tank and sending unit. Hope it all arrives by next weekend so I can get it back on the road

Good luck with it should help it stay running good with a nice clean tank

I almost forgot something - I plead Old-Timers  . When I put the 16 gal. tank into my Falcon a while back , I had to have some exhaust work done . The OEM style tank has a slant on the muffler side but the 16 gal. is straight down there which only leaves about 6" between the tank and leaf spring . At most muffler shops , the smallest diameter round reverse flow muffler is about 6" diameter [which is what I had when I went to install the 16 gal tank] - you see the problem . The OEM size muffler [hard to find and expen$ive] is about 5" diameter so it would fit but might need a little pipe work . I also looked at glass pack and turbo tube mufflers but didn't like the sound . The 5x9 oval type muffler stuck down too far in the stock location ; the 4x8 size might have been o.k. but those aren't common at muffler shops anymore . I wound up with a 5x9 tucked up under the seat well . It's documented here - http://www.tffn.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.ph ... ilit=+tank

Thanks for the info about the exhaust. Someone had put a 1 into 2 exhaust on it, so just going to have to drop the tank in and see what happens.

What kind of carter pump did you get? The FORD or the SBC street strip. I bought the SBC from ebay for $34 and its chromed. No biggy there, but I need to get a stock 6cyl foot. If you pull your old pump...can you spare the foot? I will need it for my Carter SBC.
