General Questions about Turbochargers Superchargers and NOS.

Hi Im entirely new to cars so please be patient with me. Well I recently came across a 1974 Ford Maverick i6 and bought it. I was going to eventually swap a v8 in it but then I heard about this forum and how some guys on here get huge hp gains some good enough to compete with v8s so I decided to keep the i6 :D. So now what I want to know is can I fit a supercharger and a turbocharger in my maverick? If I can what size or type should I get (brand names would be nice to because I have no idea). My NOS system question is if NOS systems are street legal in Texas and if they are then I want to know what kind of restrictions if any exist. If I can do all this Would I have to swap transmissions or gears or anything? (again I'm a n00b) and do you know of any good cold air intake kits and what is your opinion of Clifford Preformance parts? Any answers to any of these questions will be tremendously appreciated. Oh and if you could keep your suggestions on a semi small budget please that would be nice.

If you are on a budget and want to go fast, I can tell you right off the bat that building a six should not be on your list. anyone on this site can tell you that. If I were you, I would really rethink the v8 route due to the fact that things like superchargers and better heads are something to wait on when it comes to the six.

With the 8's, you have a plethora of performance parts available very easily and others things as well. Not so much with the six.

But anyways, I've never tried anything from Clifford since this was the first site I ever found when researching the six and I have all the info and products I will ever need here.

Thanks I'm still considering the v8 option but I still want to go the i6 route becasue of the fuel efficiency. I wasn't planning on doing all those upgrades at the same time I meant to do them over a period of years because I still have general engine and cosmetic repairs to do :D but I still want to know for future reference.

How much fuel efficiency are you looking for though? A well built v8 can still get you around 19 mpg but of course, that depends how your foot.

If you stick with the six, there are obvious ways of increasing the power while keeping the mpg up. 2v head conversion. If your 74 mav(hey just like mine!) still has the point, switching it to electronic ignition will be a great upgrade. Then of course there is the exhaust system.

but before doing anything big, consider getting a full tune up on the car. Then see if the carb is up to speed. You'd be surprised how much it helps to get this done.

Thanks you've given me alot to think about. So I'm having some trouble getting my hood open do you have any suggestions? I think I'm overlooking a hood popup switch am I? I can fit my hand under my hood and I can find the lever but when I pull on it it doesn't open so I still don't have any idea what size engine I have.

Never mind I got my hood open my car is a 200 btw. So if I chose to go the v8 route what I need to do it? What is the largest v8 I could fit in my mavy? Because you have a point the v8 does have a plethora of upgrades and they're way easier to find than those for the i6.

Iirc, you will need the motor mounts. Its a shame your car is not a 250 cause if it was, those Mavs already come with them.

If you are really going to go ahead with it, I strongly suggest that you head on over to www.maverick.to and do a search there. It's the best database on Mavericks and the people there are extremely friendly. You can also go over there to find parts for the v8 conversuon since they have a great For Sale section.

Good luck!

Came back to this topic because I'm very curious about your 74 Mav. Where do you happen to live? I recently remember a 74 Mav up in the buffalo area and now it's gone. Could it possibly be the one you have?

Nope not mine I live in texas. So what kind of mounts will I need to do a 302 swap do you know? links would be nice. And do you know of any superchargers/turbochargers that I can buy for my i6 if I decide to not do the engine swap (the idea of beating some v8 in a streetrace is still soooo tempting :D) thanks
