Generator to alternator conversion

Ok everyone,

Well, I am seriously considering a conversion from a generator to an alternator in my 1960 Comet.
I do a lot of city driving and find myself draining the battery while idling with the generator. I have a line on an old alt off of a 1976 Ford Torino. I would really like to find one with an internal reg. though.
Any reccomendations? Considerations? Plain advice!

Hi, Komet;
Any alternator that will fit in the mount will be fine. I don't know about the Torino one you're speaking about, but most Torinos had V8 engines and different brackets. If nothing else, go to a boneyard and get the parts from any Fairmont with the 200 (3.3L) engine. You'll need the alternator, bracket and regulator. Most Fairmonts had at least 55 amp alternators; 70 amp if it had air conditioning.

The wiring harness for the Fairmont alternators can be pulled right out of the harness on the car, too - then, you'd have a fully color-coded system to work with, along with a wiring diagram from any Chilton manual.

Thanks for the compliments. I don't have a web site or an on line post of pics yet. I still have a far way to go on my car. It's getting there though. I'm in the middle of fabricating some '59 Cadillac tail lights into the '63s. It's looking really trick. Little by little, it's becoming more Kustom.
