Generator to Alternator Question

My sons generator in his 62 falcon is toast so I told him grab the alt and brackets an extra engine I have. The alt is a newer one with a solid state reg attatched to the back. There is a single light guage wire going to a plug coming off of it that I believe is for the charge light. There are other wires from the box on back to the various terminals. Do I just hook a heavy charge wire from the red terminal on the alt to the battery side of the solenoid. If its that easy then what do I do with the old regulator and its wire harness.
