Give me hope

Well, it appears that I have a 170 (3 freeze plugs. casting code appears to be "15"...). I guess that makes my DSII, MSD 6a, and Holley 5200 essentially useless now. Are there any distributors that will fit other than the load-o-matic? This has really got me down, because I almost have all the parts for the swap.

Don't despair! You have options!

The DSII distributor will fit with some work...you'll have to turn down the housing where it goes into the engine, and swap in a newer oilpump and oilpump drive. Sounds hard, but you can easily pull the crossmember, pan and oil pump yourself, and any machineshop can reduce the distributor in no time at all (and I'd think for very little $, too).

If you don't want to go that route, the MSD box will work just fine off of the points, and the points will last forever. Points aren't as precise a trigger as the DS, but unless you're revving over 4500 rpm I wouldn't think you'd notice. There's nothing particularly wrong with a Load-O-Matic system that's working well, it's just adjusting one to a particular timing curve seems to be a lost art (if it ever was possible).

I'd say to go for the new oil pump and turn down the dist. housing, and go ahead with the swap. Not too hard to actually do, and you'll have an ignition system that much more easy to recurve, check, and maintain. (plus I'm really liking my new HW5200 carb!)

8) the dist change was s running change in 1964, so if your 170 is a late 64 or later engine, then the duraspark should bolt in with no problem. if not, PM me as i have a solution for you. i will need your location though.

I'll try to fit the DSII tomorrow then to see if it'll fit. I have no way of knowing when the block was cast, because the casting code doesn't seem to be where its supposed to be. If i remember correctly, it should be a few inches to the left of the motor mount on the passenger's side, right?

The other option is to sell your DS2 and purchase a pertronix set up as it works great to trigger an MSD device.

I just went out and looked at a 144 i have on a stand and the block casting #'s are on the driver's side behind and below the coil.

That's certainly a possibility, but you'd still need to use the autolite 1100, correct?

or for the very low investment, just get a newer 200 longblock.. they can be found pretty cheap.

That has always been my intention. Hopefully, I'll be moving to a house with a garage soon, and that's the first thing I plan to do.

Folks around here find out I run one, and they call me to come and get them for free!

Got any extras laying around in your way?

btw, March 18th is the Buick Brand X Bash at the Temple/Academy racetrack. If I can't get the 455 done in time, I may take the ol' Ranchero just for fun...wanna join me?
