good base timing numbers?

ok I got my 200 sorta out pretty good I think but don't know what to set my base timing at. I have a dual advance dissy with a pertronix in it and a 1100 carb. I do mostly highway driving so I am kinda looking for a good compromise between milage and power. right now the motor jsut feels kinda soft over 45-50 mpg.

Howdy:

If your getting 45-50 MPG I want you to tell me!!!

My guess is that you meant MPH?

Is this a '62 170 with a Holley carb and a Load-a-Matic Distributor? What trans?

My recollection is that the shop manual will specify 5 degrees BTDC for a manual three speed trans, and 12 degrees for an automatic trans.

Try 10 or 16 respectively, depending on trans. If you hear any knock, reduce the initial advance setting and try again.

Also make sure that your distributor inards are working properly- especially the vacuum advance mechanism. With time and wear these plates, springs and arms can get sticky with dust and crud.

Adios, David

David is right on the shop numbers...6* and 12*.

On mine, I run 10* BTDC with the T5, both now and when I ran an 1100. With the 1100, I still managed 27MPG @65MPH.
