That's right the 250 fired up. Had to tinker with the timing a bit, and try another carb we had laying around. Broke in the cam, then shut her down. Sounded great :D This made us very happy :D :D

There is some noise at the starter and it might be hitting the flex plate, I'm going to pull the starter now and see what's going on.

Now here's the not so happy part, there's water in the oil.
The dip stick looked a little milky, so I loosened the drain plug and drained out about a bottle cap worth of water. Not a beer bottle cap, but more like a soda screw on type cap. :bang: :bang: :bang:
Guess I'll let it sit another day and see how much water sinks to the bottom.
Any ideas where it might be coming from?

There's only one source of water in the engine. headgasket.

Or if it's been parked for a long time condensation could have built up.
Any chance you left it out in the rain?

It has rained here, but I've always had it covered.
It has been sitting in the engine bay for a few months with a tarp over it, but for that much water to get in just doesn't seem right.
When we broke in the cam, it did get a bit hot and blew steam out the over flow. Do you think the head cracked or blew the head gasket?
I didn't think it got "all that hot.

well in order to make steam the temp has to be well over 212* and the only way to tell if the head gasket is blown or if it is cracked it to pull the head

I took off the valve cover and it looked like it had gotten some condensation while sitting. The rocker assembly had some rust on it and inside the valve cover was a little wet and white. looked like white lithium grease.
I'm going to preasure test the cooling system and see if she bubbles anywhere.

EDIT....this was a double post, sorry.
My windows 98 system is complete crap.

An old trick is to drill a 1/8" hole near the top edge of the thermostat. This allows air to escape on initial start-up and keeps a steam pocket from forming.

I posted all of the events and findings of yesterday and saw it ended up as a double post. So I edited the 2nd post, and with my luck, the first one disapeared.
So here it goes again........

After letting it sit overnight-

* loosened drain plug- a little bit of water drained out (about a thimbles worth)
* pressured tested cooling system - seemed to hold 16 lbs of pressure
* did compression test - all were around 120-130 except #4, it was 50lbs.
* thinking a valve might be stuck or leaking, I removed rocker assembly and pressure tested each chamber through spark plug hole. I could hear a small noise like it was bleeding into the crank case. Thinking all is OK, I put assembly back on.
* Did another CP test, #4 still crap.
* Started it up and let her run until hot. When thermost opened, the coolant came gushing out and boiling over. Shut her down, and let cool down some.
* Did another CP test and #4 was up to 125lbs. :D
* drained old oil, and tossed filter (did not re-fill)
* Put in a 160* thermostat.
* Put 16 lbs of pressue to cooling system and let sit over night.

This morning-----
* checked pressure. It bled down 2lbs., but that could be from dripping heater and radiator hoses or ??????????.
* Took out drain plug and only 2 drops of water came out.
* filled with new oil and new filter
I'm not worried about the water problem much any more.
* fired her up without radiator cap and let her run until hot. Thermostat opened before boil over and seemed to circulate fine. Water did rise, so I put on cap. Started to boil over into resivior (sp) (cap doing it's job.)
But she still got warmer than I'd like.

Radiator is from the stock 170 with an electric fan pushing from front, trans cooler is behind radiator (between rad and motor)

Just did another CP test on #4
first time 120lbs
2nd time 100lbs
3rd time 70lbs.

I know there's alot going on in this post, but it's 2 days worth.

Any input?
