Harmonic Balancer Source for 250 I6

I'm not sure if the crank diameters are the same for the 4.6 and 250.
The 4.6 hub is definately shorter than the 250 so maybe a spacer would work. I didn't try it to see if the 4.6 would work after I saw one at a Ford display. It didn't look very close to the 250 one at all, so I just dropped it and found an aftermarket vendor for one.

The hub for the 300 one is the same as a 250. But it would install closer to the timing chain cover than a 250 one. But it would probably still work. And it you use a spacer than that would solve that problem.

Surfed around: 4.6L damper won't go, the snout diam. is about 1 1/4 while the SBF, 300 and 250 has 1 3/8.

'64-'78 330/5.4L 8-cyl. seems to have the same diam crank snout. But I guess it won't be any easier to find a damper for that. I guess modifying the SBF or spacing the 300 would be among the easiest ways so far.

I did end up sending an email to Vector(Fisher) about a week and a half ago just for grins... I asked if they had applications for the small Ford I-6s; 144,170, 200, 250. Finally got a response yesterday:

"yes we do please give us a call 562 234 7224"

SBC crank snout is ~1.25". One could probably be machined to work and have the pulley machined into it.

Would there be any interest on this board for something like that?

I got the same email from those guys. Have you tried phoning them yet to find out what they can offer?

I called. Spoke with Tim. The number is his cell phone. He said his balancer runs about $375. It has an aluminum outer case with a steel center that is used to absorb the shock. He stated that with his zero or neutral balanced balancer there is no need to balance the crank as the balancer does a tremendous job in absorbing. Also says a person with his balancer will never have to buy another one, though if for some reason it went bad, it was somewhat rebuildable. He was pleasant to speak with, knowledgable about our sixes and even offered to come down on the price $20 or $30 bucks. This was for the 2 groove balancer.

Is $375 reasonable for a performance balancer?

Guy at work had a damper on his newer exploder delam on him this week (4.0L ohc v6) got the old one off him and gonna see how it is on the 200 when I get back in town. it has the 36-1 wheel built into it already adn is serp. going to see if maybe I could just use it as is or have a spare built using his pulley sleeve. the 36-1 wheel is pretty small though compared to the escourt one I have (maybe 3-4" in diameter vs 6") it is machined into the hub though so the pickup would have to be located in the same place as the 4.0L ohc motor.

$375 sounds expensive. I think I'll wait to see what pans out with Mike's new WD status with his suppliers.

But here's the big advantage. Considering that I am now a WD distributor, they are more willing to work with us. Producing parts for applications which are not currently in production, such as timing sets and balancers for the US250. As per our conversation this morning, they are going to start on the US250 balancer and timing sets ASAP. So I should have them available in two or three months.

Maybe a group of us put our orders together for a balancer/timing set to get a decent price.

Yes it is a considerable amount of money and yes it is a reasonable price as far as I can determine. Especially with the long stroke 250. The peace of mind at 5500 RPM (or more) with a considerable chunk of change put into a performance built engine is part of the total picture. I have heard that performance balancers "save cases" or prevent some sorts of reciprocating parts - grenading.

PS Anyone know how different types work ?

250 dampners are readilly available over here for A$65 about US$58

The company are called Nuline, i just bought one for my 2V :D

Damper Doc is the way to go... I just replaced mine with one of the Doc's rebuilt units. First Class operation, IMO.
Was the timing mark on your Damper Doctor balancer in the right location? Mine was 180 deg off. I am going to be calling them tomorrow to see what we can work out. Of course I didn't figure this out until it was installed...
