Has anyone 'fixed' the 3 bolt siamese exhaust port?

Having probs with my extractors, they keep leaking at the point where there "should" be another bolt - bottom of the siamese port. Has anyone ever put another stud there? The exhaust shop's answer was, "You need a new set of extractors", seems like a short term fix to me. Any ideas?

If there is room to drill and tap another hole in the head, I don't see it being a problem. You also need to make sure that there is room on the extractor flange to place another bolt hole and allow you to put a wrench or socket on it without interfering with one of the tubes.

my big problem with new extractors was blowing gaskets, after the third one, extractors came off and had my mate reface them, ported them also, these were 4mm out from the jig they used. My new gasket is a TC Cortina one, was at Autobahn and had much more meat around the centre ports, i still had issues refitting and bolts etc, bloody nightmare to be honest, tried studding a couple to at least locate the gasket, stud nuts to big and interfered with the pipe bends, i would like to see a set of extractors that would allow the use of a stud kit, then get a gear wrench to use to get them done up. At least get them faced up, this will help, i bet they are out, as far as heat goes, the head can take a lot more heat than the extractors. So it wont be the head. After watching a special on Pacemaker on Grand Tourer Dreams, i would buy these as my next set, my set are Hi-tech’s.

Thanks CNC, Would love to put another bolt in but pioneering such a thing on a 2v head, especially mine, seems a bit risky. Would hate render it un-usable. Does anyone "know" if there is enough real estate there to drill and tap another hole? Has anyone looked at doing it?
Asked the question @ my local engineering shop but his response ("Anything is possible") didn't fill me with confidence.

I'm hearing ya!! :bang:

i’d be checking the extractors with a straight edge first, you wont have to drill and tap if you extractors that are not straight. I did mine and its running great now and have since raced it twice and clocked up more k’s than the previous last 2 gaskets lasted.

:hmmm:

That's why I don't like steel tube headers. The factory 1981 to 1983 US header is practically an XU1/XT5 header with the ability to make the best power, but it looks strange on a pre cross flow six.

In context with a good M code Falcon, though, you ideally need a new set of New Old Stock headers. After 42 years of 2V 170 HP bliss, the tubes and flange on the factory header no longer make a solid bridge.

Some where, in a garage in Australia, there are a stock set of factory headers with your name written on it.

The other option is to stiffen it up with an extra laser or water cut plate, and mig weld it to the header. That should help.

To put an extra stud in it is possible, there is room in the water jacket to do it.

The header sweeps back and makes it hard to access, but it would do the job.

The solution is to copy it with a smaller unbracko bolt. Brass BMC/Leyland A series Mini studs loctited and brass bolts allow everything to sit properly.

I don't know what XU1/XT5 is? Got any pics?

Finding them would be 1 thing mate, then getting someone who knows what they are to part with them could prove even harder. Have only ever seen 1 set of the factory tuned length extractors and I sold the car I fitted them to. :bang:

Where you racing your wagon at xr? Have heard something about a regular 'super six' meeting at Warwick somewhere but don't know the details.
Will check the face next time they're off, very soon by the sound of it. Is there a different part # for the corty gasket? Was it ACL or a different brand? Metal or cardboard-ish? I'm using custom made inlet gaskets but have to keep buying the ACL HA294 kit to get the metal extractor set. At $50 a pop, I'm over it, and got a pile of the paper inlet gaskets if you're using them. I own the program for the inlet 1's already so I can order any qty @ any time, they last and can be re used a couple of times but that's academic when I'm pulling the inlet to do extractors as much as I do. I think I'll be exploring the possibilities for the extractor set when I get more inlets done, if nothing else, I won't have to keep paying for the paper inlets that I don't use.

Sorry xctasy, little more info in 'layman's terms' mate? Not sure what that means?

Just spoke to the local All Ford wrecker, reckon they have a few sets on the shelf! On my way to check them out, with a straight edge of course!

Out at Warwick mate, the Six Banger Nats is on once a year in Sept, the Dragfest meet is there big one, its in October, they have a Aus Vs NZ Nostalgia meet in August, all these meets are bloody awesome, so laid back yet professionally run, the amenities are very good. Compared to Willowbank i like it more, nothing wrong with Willowbank buts its not the same atmosphere and mateship.

Has nice small, well formed head on a standard bolt shank. As such, they are employed to use a size bigger with a smaller head. Valiant guys use it for the always loose flywheel bolts on D-series Hemi L6's, works a treat. It will give you the purcase you need, and will be small enough to place, and remove.

new pacemakers are avaiable for $385 odd on ebay. just saying.

Thanks gb, pacemakers are definitely the top shelf as far as extractors go. Waiting on a mate with an exhaust shop in the family to get back to me.

Thanks xr, don't ask me about willowbank, apparently it's 'acceptable' to have a chev badge on a commodore and "I'm" the bad guy! Seems I missed them all this year but will be there next year, would appreciate a 'reminder' or any info you can forward prior to the events next year. Are you a member of a club? Love to catch up with you. Did you get the info on the elec. dizzy I put on that other post?

There is a Facebook page for the Six Banger Nats, i have an Hottie and Vintage Inline Face book page. We have tried twice in the last few months to go to Willowbank, one was cancelled, 2 3rds there with my mates Chev LC, had a shower, no rain around but braking are had water in it, another one, they had no ambulance turn up, once again, about to go down. Bit over it, can happen anytime as its motorsport and you pray to the weather gods.
