Header Paint? POR-20/VHT

Anyone have personal experience with either of these products. New header arrives tomorrow and I had it shipped unpainted cause I knew that would burn off. Jet-Hot wants $200 which I think is too high for a single 6cyl header.

I havn't used their POR-20 before, but I have used their POR-15. The POR-15 requires you to follow the procedures to the T, and essentially nothing will stick to it after it has dried. Sorry, this info doesn't pertain to the POR-20 but I would ask a lot of questions to their techs to make sure you get it right the first time if it's anything like their POR-15.

Background, my dad had the ENTIRE body and frame of his Willys CJ painted with POR-15. Great plan, no rust....ever. After the POR-15 had been sprayed on, he found piss poor body work and other stuff wrong. Okay, we'll just fix it and go from there(the body shop went out of business for tax evasion) This stuff just won't come off, a week in a 30 gallon trash can of lye/water didn't touch it, it's a PITA to sand off, and well getting it right the first time is extremely extremely important with the POR-15. Then you can't paint POR-15 to itself once the first coat has dried, scuffing didn't help. We're now trying to figure out what will stick and be a decent base for his top coat.

It really is awesome stuff when you get it right, but if you don't, you're going to have a bad day. Or weeks, if you're my dad and can't paint your jeep because no amount of scuffing will make it stick to itself once dried.

I know Jet-Hot sounds expensive, but the coating will reduce underhood temperatures and the header will last longer.

I used VHT on my old exhaust manifold, and it lasted a couple years. Until I replaced it with a Jet-Hot coated heater, at least. Still looked good when I took it off. It was an extra $30 for me to order the headers already coated...but I guess the information doesn't do you any good :)

It was $150 extra to have Clifford's coat them. That would have been over $500 for the header. Retrospec is a funny thing, probably would have been a good idea, but I've read quite a few posts where even the Jet-Hot went bad. They stand behind their stuff, but still have to pull and ship them. Thanks for the comments guy's. Stuff can't look new forever I guess.

Ah. I bought the CI header. I suppose the difference is Mike gets them coated all at once, while Clifford is piecemeal. Like I said, I had a pretty good experience with VHT.

If Mike had one for a Bronco, I'd have bought from him. Just did a test fit and kind of glad I didn't buy them coated. Going to have to do a little work. Hitting the starter bolt for one thing. Think I'll weld the outside of the tubes and may take a little grinding on flange. Have to shorten the starter bolt and go from there.
