I have finally figured out why my engine has beena bit tough to tune. It appears that I have a carter yf-1 carb, with the original 65 dizzy. ANy syggestions on how the timing should be set on this thing? I guess this will make it easier to upgrade to the DSII, anybody have any spares they want to let go? Thanks for any advice, BTW is the carter yf-1 a better carb than the autolite 1100??

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew,

The 1940 was a replacement carb for the small sixes but had several variations. One variation had a push in cap in the upper left side - in for the later dizzies and out for the early ones (Once 'pushed in' it could not be undone) others were made for for each specific engine type. Your problem could be carb related but have other causes also. What is the specific problem?

My problem is a relatively poor and rich idle, and off the line it is strong, but with higher rpm it just falls on it's face. I am beginnning to think that maybe the carb does not have the SCV, and that the dizzy is not getting enough advance? I am not sure how to tell if it has the SCV or not, but it is missing the exterior valve looking part (sorry for the vague description) that can be seen in the picture on the pony carbs website.

Problems at idle are not generally dizzie related (other than timing). You may want to try putting a kit in the carb and see if that helps things. JMHO of course.

That distributor needs the Spark Control Valve to work correctly. You could do a poor boy test by advancing the timing about 15 degrees and see if it pulls better at high speed. This will tell you if the advance is inadequate at this time. It won't idle very well though, so it needs to be a brief test.
