I'm having a reaaaally bad night of working on the car. I took the carb off to clean it out, and tried to get the main jet out. I managed to get it out a few turns, then the head stripped, now it's stuck half out!! Do I have to go find a new carb or what??

Howdy Tbone:

How about some more details? What kind of carb is it? Are the jets brass?

If they are brass, it is possible to gently drill out the soft brass jet and peel the final threads away from the pot metal body. Be careful though, you don't want to damage the threads in the carb body.

Use a dab of anti-seize compound on the new jets before installing.

The right tool helps a bunch in removing jets. A screw driver that is too small is just asking for a damaged jet.

Adios, David

Thanks David, but apparently the jets on a Carter YF aren't supposed to be removable? that's what the Jeep websites say anyways. So I went ahead and just ordered a rebuilt unit. The money's worth it just for the peace of mind anyhow. I'm really tired of dealing with old seized parts! but I guess that comes with the old-car territory. I'll keep the carb I messed up for parts - and as a reminder of what an incompetent mechanic I am  .

not incompetent, just ignorant of that fact, that can always change, everyone has some similar story, hell, i can remember a time when i thought that the exhaust pipe was what moved the car (like a prop, or a jet engine) and that was why the cars with the two bigger pipes moved faster than the cars with the one small pipe
cars are a learning experince, just make sure you don't keep making the same mistakes and you'll be good to go
