Hello everyone,

I am in the process of swapping an engine from a Fairmont Ghia '87 into a dirt track car for Meremere. Please dont ask me how this all came to be!

Anyway, if anybody has any advice for what to do and how to do it I would greatly appreciate it.

Also if anybody wants the interior and glass etc from the old car (even the chassis itself - minus a few parts) they are welcome to make offers. I am in the central Auckland area and can be contacted on 09-636-8430.

Righto, she's an all in brawl between the only other Kiwis here...AlloyDave vs Xecute in a fight for the seats, electronic dash and uppolstery. I think I'll win it'll fit my XE! Will I be able to take it as excess bagage on a flight....no

Sorry, gotta pass it up. Great to see more 5+1's here (People who Aussies realise can't say sex)

Would the '+1' part be referring to the pet, by any chance?

nah mate. 5+1= Sex if you an NZ'er, Six if youre an Aussie. It's an accent thing, Disco', honest.

E.g.
Question:How many beers you got?
Kiwi: :NZ: Sex
Aussie: :oz: Six
Question:What did you do last night?
Kiwi: :NZ: Had Six
Aussie: :NZ: Had Sex

Oh, and the Aussies, when taking the pi$$ outa Kiwis, called Jim Richards Jum Ruchards, to copy the Kuywi accent.

Get the picture? See, I'm not that sensitive about being a patriotic Kiwi. :D

No pets involved... yet!

Oh, and back to the question. Find a either Cleveland 351 and FMX combo or an XG spec OHC, and kick a$$. XF's aren't that strong in a bang up, but it beats a Jappa!

8) XC Falcons seem to be the weapon of choice at our local speedway for the fender bender class. There was (or is) a 265 Hemi Charger that would win by getting out in front and then give all the others a send-off as he lapped them. But it got punched into the wall really hard in the last race of the season, so he is building a new one over winter.

My main concerns are to do with the electronic injection and the electrical stuff. I feel confident that we can handle the installation of the motor itself, but it occurs to me that things could get sticky when it comes to setting up the electrics. I have a friend that is an auto electrician. So any feedback from you guys could be filtered through him so that we are at least heading in the right direction. Is it as simple as chopping off what we no longer need? I feel at a loss because my knowledge of wiring harnesses is rather non-existant. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks,

B

gidday Brad & Anita, what class are going to run in? for an easy install get
a xe carb intake and dissy and its as easy as hooking up the fuel and a power wire.if your running in class C HOTROD i think you could get a
2 barrel holley and manifold.I have thought about joining MEREMERE just in the street stock class.im in auckland so if you need any info or help let me know.

cheers dave67xr6

Thank you very much for the feed back Dave. What you have said sounds so simple too! I may be doing some more work on it tomorrow so will see what the go is. The chassis that this motor will be going into is a purpose built dirt tracker. I think this means we will be in the "Altered B" class since it has a space frame and a six cyl engine. So I will have to read up on the rules to make sure of what we are allowed.

By the way if you need any parts that we are not using give us a yell. By the way, do you (anybody) have any suggestions about what gearbox to use? Apparently there is a 3 and a 4 speed that can bolt onto them.

Yeah, unless you have the toploader bellhousing (not so likely), you can bolt the all-synchro 3 speeder or the Aussie 4-speed (Borg Warner) right up. Do you shift down much, or just sit in gear and feather the clutch?

Adam.

I must say, it is hard to find the time to have a decent e-mail conversation these days!!!!

As far as I know Addo the clutch slipping takes second place to using a couple of gears that keep the revs where you want them to be. Is one g/box better at withstanding abuse than the other?

Well, Toploaders are dear - too dear, and on the "strongarm" side of shifting. I'd settle for the single rail 4-slotter, expecting to pillage the odd three speed box for spare parts (lots of interchanges). I don't know what the thinnest oil you can run is, but it would be a good thing. The single rail ratios varied widely by car and motor.

If you fit a certain bellhousing, it's possible to run a twin plate clutch, I believe (ssshhh - secret!). Necessary? Probably not.

Adam.

hey there, just had a look at the altered b class rules .looks like you can run anything in the way of carburation .might be time for a 4 barrell holley
and manifold.manifolds are quite on the expensive side (around $250) and a decent holley probably around $350 .let me know if you need a camshaft done i know a grinder in pukekohe who could do ya a good deal.Did you guys go down to meremere on the 18th .If you need parts give me a email and ill see what sort of deal i can sort out for you.
CHEERS DAVE

thanks Dave and Addo for the info. We didn't go down on the 18th, things are still at the "lets get the car running stage". At the moment we are going for the budget option. So that means no camshaft job and just the standard carburation. So Dave if you have any parts that might be suitable... Our requirements are:

1 x carburettor to suit/from XE or XF
1 x manifold
1 x dizzy

as per your advice from a previous post. By the way there is a guy up in Swanson with a garage full of XD - EA parts. His number is usually in the T&E.

hey guys ,i might have a dizzy but youll need a new ignition module.unfortunatly i sold an old manifold and carb of a xe at the swap meet in pukekohe ($40.00 ) .If your buying a secondhand carb and manifold check the carb has got a good idle solinoid and vacuam transfer port on them ,there bloody expensive to buy .Ive just been thru it on my mates XY .We got a crashed XF with a carby engine for $200 . The parts to get the carby right were almost as much as the car .You could try
XTREME TYRE & AUTO in holmes rod manurewa ,i think you can get a
carb and manifold there for about $50.00 or BJs wreckers in wiri they will probably cheaper but youll have to take it off yourself they may have a dizzy as well. I get back to you on the dizzy ,im having a digout in the garage this weekend.

cheers dave
