help with sons 69 I-250

My son has a 69 with I-250 we are restoring. It did not run when we bought it. Cleaned the fuel system, rebuilt the carb, replaced most of the underhoad ignition system (stock) and charging system... and... it fired right up. Runs very quite, no ticks or knocks. But it doesn't idle well or accelerate up into rpms well. Once past the transition to rpms it runs great. Idle is not bad but not perfect. It has a slight popping from the exhaust... very slight. I think the carb needs replacing myself... the accelerator pump doesn't seem to work. I would like to buy a new one for his BD and he wants a 2 bbl. Any ideas? His down the road ambitions are an aussie head and new exhaust system.

An electronic ignition will help smooth out the idle.

An adapter for a Ford 2bbl or Holley 350 would work well now and be usable with the Aussie head later.

Probably the best distributor to install is a late 70's Duraspark II. This can be coupled with the factory Ignition module, a GM module, or an MSD box.

As far as carbs go, there are twr 2bbl carbs that are used mostly. The Holly-Webber 5200/Webber 32/36 (Basically the same carb), and the Webber 2300. The HW is a 2 stage progressive linkage carb that flows at about 270CFM. The Holley is available in 2 flavors, 350 and 500CFM. The HW carb will give better economy, but is harder to tune, and the Holley will perform better, but is not so great on milage. I'm in the process of installing an HW 5200 as part of my engine install, so I'll find out about how hard it is to tune soon.

On the other hand, you should know that the '69 250 engine came with an Autolite 1101 one barrel. It is easy and cheap to rebuild. It is quite sought after by 200 owners looking for a bolt one upgrade to their '64 to '69 engines. It is rated at 215 CFM as compared to 150 ('68 & '69) or 185 CFM ('65 - '67) for the 200 #1100 Autolites.

Also know that a 2 barrel with an adaptor may create hood clearance problems. The 2 stage two barrel Holley/Webers #5200s are rated between 235 and 270 CFM, while the wide base Holley #2300s are commonly available in 350 or 500 CFM.

Either would be handicapped some flowing through a funnel adaptor, would require linkage and air cleaner fabrication, and some modification to the fuel lines and vacuum connectors.

A Petronix Ignitor in your '69 distributor would be an easy, inexpensive upgrade. This distributor already has both vacuum and centrifugal advance in place.

For set-and-forget reliability the DuraSpark II system is hard to equal. If you can find a good donor in the recycle yard get everthing from to plug wires to hold down clamp and bolt. Include the distributor, coil, module, wiring harness & plug wires. Check it out or shaft tightness and smooth rotation, clean it up install and forget.

In either case add an additional 5 degrees to the stock initial advance setting and enjoy.

Thanks for the information. We rebuilt the carb but probably didn't do a good job or it had problems to begin with. The acc pump is not working and the linkage is not in the best shape. Perhaps I'll try again then decide.

I ordered the falcon book. Looks like the information source.
