I have a rebuilt 250 with new carb etc. ZERO Miles and don't want another Mustang ( have 6) what would you guys suggest Maverick, Falcon? Can't seem to find a nice Maverick in Phoenix (most have V8's and Run) want a non running body also i see putting it in 65-68 Mustang has some hood clearance problems. Gary gellswo258@aol.com

Sounds to me like you could benefit finding a '63-'67 Ranchero to haul your spare parts around in. The clearance problems can be mitigated with some creative engineering. Starting in '63 the firewalls in Falcons were large enough to handle a SBF (same as 250).

I have seen a '66 F100 with a 200 in it, custom fab some motor mounts and bolt it to any SBF trans. In the truck I saw they even modified the Z-bar linkage to work with the small bell. It was redneck/ghetto and I wished I had a camera at the time.

Gary:

There is a 67 Fairlane Ranchero body on craigslist Phoenix right now for $1200. You may want to check it out.

Keep in contact as myself, Rich and Mike all are in the area along with others.

AFAIK, the "early" 63's had the same clearance problems as the 60-62 Falcons. The "later" 63's used what is referred to as a "slant" firewall for V8 / Toploader / T-10 bell clearance.

I have a 63 Wagon I'm currently putting a T5 in with C7ZA bell and adapter on a 'C8xx block. Unfortunately, the firewall is the "early" type and will require forming with the BFH for clearance.

I also have a '61 Comet that I put a 250 in with a Toploader. This required major BFH forming . It is actually pretty easy to bang out enough clearance once the engine bay is empty but the action can cause dash bulbs and other vibration sensitive things to stop working.

:D Way back when,a friend of mine in Fl put a 292 six into an early(mid 50`s) Chebby body.To fix the clearence problems,he took out the area of the firewall that was causing the fitment problems along with the entire tranny hump in one piece.AFTER fitting the new drivetrain,he reinsatalled the removed sheet metal after fitting some extra sheetmetal to give proper clearance. He welded in the modified sheetmetal.Looked VERY factory. He did own a body shop,so he had access to just about any tools needed.
