All Small Six High altitude jet size autolite 1101

This relates to all small sixes
Hey all,

Been a while BUT:
Good news: I did find that the fuel pressure was the problem, way too much.

Bad news: ordered a new Carter m6399 rated for 4-5.5psi but the one I got in the mail was some Chinese knockoff, went to 15psi and flooded the 6. 😐

rockauto’s giving me a free replacement, hopefully that one works.

I’m also going to hook up a fuel pressure regulator before the carb. Any recommendations to what psi I should set it to? Was thinking just 4.0 psi

What carb are you using? Stock domestic style( autolite, Holley) that is good, Webber is more like 2 to 3. 4 might be good but definitely verify with Webber. It’s been to long for me, I would have to look it up🥹

We're pretty close to 100% of new mechanical pumps being bad. As far as I can see from buying and returning multiple brands, they all come from the same china plant.
Unless you use a return line pressure regulator, 15 psi is going to blow thru it. I have a quality Holley non-return that does reduce and hold 11 psi to 5psi- but it's behind an electric pump. Mechanical pumps have a strong pulse of fuel for a few degrees of rotation out of 720*. The pulse makes the regulators job harder.

4psi is a good number. As low as possible without WOT fuel starvation= long carb life. (Just my practice and preference)
