Holley 1908 carburetor

My daughter is driving a 61 Comet with a 170 and 2 speed automatic. We upgraded to the Pertronix I ignition last month and would like to purchase a reamnufactured carburetor. The correct tag number would be 1908 C1DE-F for the automatic and PCV emissions-all I can find for replacement are the C1DE-C and D which are for non-smogged engines. What is the difference between the the smog and non-smog carbs? Can I buy the C1DE-D and use it? Any other advice re: this process would be appreciated?

i would think that any engine from '61 would be non-smog. the non smog equiptment could only flow better since emissions are not a concern.
 
Don't trade in your original. Always wear the core charge. At some point either during the swap or later, you will need to refer to your original carb...

The answer to the first question is Yes. The "D" and "F" versions appear to be identical.

The second part question is to heed Adams advice and hang onto your original carb- for several reasons; Number one is originality. Number two is for reference. 3- if it is rebuildable consider rebuilding it and holding it in reserve- or just rebuild it and grin. Grin with the $ savings, and from the satisfaction of rebuilding it yourself.

Thanx for the help all-

I have rebuilt the the current carb, however, the engine cuts out on corners and speed bumps. I can shake the car at idle and it will stall. I have adjusted the float MANY times with some improvement. I can get the idle problem to go away, however, the float level is so low that it cuts out at hi-speed do to lack of fuel.

So I am thinking that there is some defect in the carb itself?

Anbody suffer anything similar and/or know a remedy?
 
Thats it!! I have had the same problem for over a year and I have a new "motter" (spell check would be handy huh?).

Anyone else have a similar problem and maybe a solution?

It wouldn't be original, but try a Holley 1909 instead of the 1908. Ford switched to this carb in 62, and it has a completely different float bowl setup. Seems like you guys know that the problem lies with float level, maybe Ford knew the same thing in '61, thus the carb model change for '62?
 
I took the advice, however, I found that the add-on stuff I needed to make the 1909 work was hard to find. I needed an air cleaner bottom, different carb spacer to recieve bracket for bottom of air cleaner, choke clamp for top of bowl and center stud for top of carb for air cleaner top. Since this carb was not in production long I had trouble locating everything I needed.

I settled on and Autolite 1100 as they were produced a lot longer and I found the balance of the parts easily-runs great now.

During my research I spoke with a guy who told that Ford produced a baffle for the 1908 that eliminated my problem. He said the bowl (sidecover) was slotted to receive the baffle and this eliminated the fuel sloshing which caused my stalling on turns and speed bumps. Anybody seen this?
