Holley 1946 vs Carter YF from a 250

Anyone out there have any experience with both of these carbs? I am wondering which one is better performace-wise.

Thanks,

Kirk

I personally like the YF. When I first got my '65 the PO had put a 1946 on the 200. Even with a manual I could never really get the thing tuned right. I know that some people have had great success with the 1946, but for me its just a too complicated carb for the vehicle that I've got. I just recently put on a YF off of a '70 maveric 200 & so I'm still tuning it. I haven't really noticed super sugnificant performance increases, but it is easier to tune & I seem to be getting better gas milage. If you do go with the 1946 I've got 2 that I'll sell you for a great price...
Take care,
Edwin

The 1946 carb is designed to be used with EGR systems.
If you don't have one, the result will be an over-rich mixture in the lower-midrange (just above idle, like a 1/8 throttle). This is where the EGR puts the most exhaust into the intake, leaning out the resulting mix.

To tune an engine without EGR underneath this carb, you can use a lighter spring in the distributor's primary side. This will give earlier advance through the lower RPM range and offset the richness, giving more torque. There will then be a slight 'flat spot' in the spark advance from about 1800RPM to around 2200RPM, but chances are, you won't notice it when driving.

The main advantages of the 1946 are the 'active' design of the power valve and the larger venturi (1.75") as compared to most of the Mustang carbs (1.5" or 1.625" venturis are more common). While some claims are in these pages as to getting better MPG, that will only happen if you have the EGR running underneath this carb.

Hope this helps!

Gents...

Thanks for your replies.

The EGR/1946 richness makes sense. I dropped the mainjet from 65 to 63 to try to offset this... Maybe I went the wrong way and should be looking at the dist...

The reason I ask about the YF is a new arrival at the pick'n'pull is a 79 Granada with a 250 and a fairly new rebuild YF. I can snatch it and the aircleaner for $35...

my 1946 would always stall if i would slam on it from idle, tried adjusting it the best i could and it always seemed to do it, seemed like the motor would just die out and not have any power to turn the wheels, hopefully the 5200 will help this out
