Holley-Webber 5200 air cleaner mount

Just got my 5200 carb from Stovebolt, and was rather supprised to see that it had such a wierd oval shape to the top. Besides the oval shape, the carb attaches to the air cleaner with 4 bolts around the edge rather than a single center post. What have those of you who have switched to a 5200 done for an air cleaner mount? I wonder if I'll have to build a custom bottom plate to get an air cleaner to mount properly?
 
I made a custom bottom for the stock aircleaner. To hold it on I put a bolt in two of the four holes and ran a piece of metal between them and drilled and tapped a hole for the aircleaner wing nut.
 
I swear I've seen an adapter that someone sells somewhere... I'll do some checking and reply if I find it again...
 
a pinto has the same carb and the air cleaner has a low profile, aint pretty but it works great!

Thanks cfmustang, but I called and that Carbs Unlimited place has never made one to mount on the 5200.

TheDude, Perfect! I'm going to use that as my template for an adapter. I'm ordering a pollished aluminum ball milled oval air cleaner off eBay.

I just hope that it is a low enough profile to fit under the hood.

I have a Holley/Weber 5200 from Stovebolt Engines and it is the same as a Weber 32/36. Weber had Holley build them for them in the 70's due to the demand. You can get an adaptor from Stovebolt or you can fab your own. I used my air cleaner gasket to mark a piece of .063 aluminum and cut it with my jig saw. I'm using a triangular Holley foam type filter on it but you can make a piece to go across the carb and attatch it to studs on opposing corners of the carb. Just make sure you use all locking nuts you wouldn't want one to vibrate loose and drop into your carb.

I called Stovebolt today, and they sell a breather adapter for the 5200. It has an offset bracket to let you to screw down a standard air cleaner. The bracket screws in to a spot inbetween the butterflies. You have to remove one of the carb screws and replace it with one that comes with the bracket.

I could make one, but at 10 bucks to buy his, I figured why bother.

Hope I don't step on any toes since I'm new here ....

Weber carbs and their brethren all have one inherit problem with running those 5 1/8" air filter adapters, it absolutely destroys the airflow into the venturi's. If you search around, find a Ramflo dealer (made in Aust.) as their air filters are designed to flow dead straight into the throats as the carb was meant to breathe. I sell a lot of these filters for Webers on offroad trucks, they handle dirt better than the K&N style guaze types and are washable , not to mention very well built . The sandwich type filters that are less than 3" can actually cut overall carb flow down quite a bit , some engines lose 20% or more power with them . The Ramflo installed is typically less than 2.5" tall and will fit uner most hood configurations...

what happens the first time you get a backfire, or if you can't get the foam to seal completely?

as for allowing the air to flow straight to the venturi, why not just get the K&N top filter? the "Xtream" i believe
 
The Ramflo is highly flame retardent , mine has survived several backfires with no issues on my offroad truck . As far as sealing, these are much better than most of the K&N's as the foam will conform to irregular shapes better .

I'm not going to argue points of air cleaner quality, but K&N's used on Webers has been a bit of a sore spot with me for years. These gauze filters allow a certain amount of oily dirt to pass through, a lot of the carbs I get in to rebuild have this dirt all over the inside , not good for an engine. The Ramflo's foam element will not allow this to happen and does not spread out when washed .

The Ramflo triangle filter is the same as the Holley or Elderbrock version, right?

Other than maybe a difference in materials I'm sure they are about the same . So far I've been very impressed with their overall quality , the baseplates are very tough as well as the cover "cage" .

The one from the 1972-1975 Mercury Capri fits perfectly; it even has a warm-air diverter with vacuum controller and thermostat built right in! Look for the 2000cc engine in a boneyard, as it had the same H/W carb on it. This filter wraps over the top of the engine with a low profile to fit neatly under the hood - it's very quiet, too!
 
Well. I've had no luck in finding a local head shop that will mill down the intake on my 79 log head for a direct mount. So I ordered a Clifford 2bbl adapter. I just received the adapter, the aluminum air cleaner I listed in an earlier post, and a mounting plate adapter for the 5200. When I put it all together, the dang thing is like 9 inches tall. I'm afraid that I'll have hood clearence issues. The old engine is still in the car, and when I measure the distance from the intake mounting surface to the top of the breather bolt on the top of the stock carb, it's only about 7 1/2 inches.

I may be in trouble.

There are two versions of the 32/36. The DFV is the oval which is the same as the 5200. The DGV is the square which seems to be the most common that you will see at the Weber sites.
