Hey fordsixers ,first post to your site . I have a 62 Ranchero w/170 3 spd turning a Maverick 2.83 rearend. The Holly 1909 needs rebuild but I want to put an Autolite 1100 from Pony Carbs in its place. Can I run the 1100 with my original distrbutor and a Pertronics upgrage or should I junk it for a new style distrbutor ? It seem to run fine before carb died. Air cleaner and linkage seems simple . What do you think? Thanks ,Rich

You should have no trouble just swapping out the carb. The Pertronix I is a very good upgrade for relatively little money. Think about getting the Flamethrower coil too. Then you can run colder plugs and open them up to .50.

UNLESS the dist is for a load-o-matic, which will cause serious running problems. I have never had this prob and don't know how to identify the load-o-matic distributor system. In that case, you have to get a load-o-matic specific carb. Other guys will help you identify it.

If you don't have the load-o-matic, do the mods in steps. Change out the carb first and get it up to spec. At the very least, you need a vacuum gauge. You really need a dwell tach too. Put the car in 'drive' or neutral, adjust the idle to about 700-750 rpm on the dwell tach. Use a vacuum gauge and adjust the idle to 18 pounds minimum first. Then set then the timing and the fuel mix while the car is idling. You can play with the timing by driving according to the instructions Pony gives you.

Once the car is working well with the new carb, change out the ignition to the system you want to install, in your case the Pertronix. Once it is in, you need to do all the adjustments again. It will be easier this time. First off, you will probably have to back off the idle. You can lean out the fuel mix too, because you have much more efficient combustion with electronic ignition. Then you can fool with the timing as you drive.

Remember, the Flamethrower is a 12V coil so you have to bypass the 6v pink wire.

If you have more money or time, you might try the DuraSpark II system. These can be salvaged at junk yards or bought new. Read about it here using the 'search' function: DS II is the most common abbreviation. The most expensive but most elegant is the DUI sold by Mike at Classics Inline linked above or the Ford Six Shop below.

Assuming the dizzy on the 170 is original, it's a Load-O-Matic (LOM). Shouldn't be a problem to switch carbs as long as you get an Autolite 1100 with the SCV (spark control valve), which most of them had anyway.

If you ever want to swap dizzy's just remember that the LOM dizzy's need SCV carbs, but SCV carbs don't need LOM dizzy's.

What are you planning on doing with the old 1909?

W00t w00t. Jamyers off the bench, takes the pass and .... SCORE!!!!

Load-o-matic specialist.

:D Hi Ludwig.Don`t you mean.050 gap on plugs?.50=1/2 inch.Would take a DANDY ign system to jump a half inch gap.Hehehehehe.

Thanks very much for the info. I've been debating 1bbl or 2bbl for a while and the 1bbl seems much simpler to install .I almost let Pony Carbs rebuild the Holley 1909 but I need more flow. I'll keep the 1909 on the shelf with all the other parts I store. It has an SCV where the dist vac line installs so I must have a LOM dist. The book I have(Motors Auto Manual 1971) shows nice detailed views of carbs from Autolite,Holley,Rochester and has some info on the LOM dist which says is made by Holley, Thanks again, Rich
