Hot Rodders, We have a Problem.....

Part of my job running D+O includes finding junked I6 Ford engines. My Small block Ford adaptor requires a stock crank flange to be machined from a stock crank. I'm fairly fortunate to inspect some engines that have been under 'Extreame Duress!'

This is a 1984 Cross-flow 4.1 EFI block which decided to chuck a leg out of bed after the owner over-cooked it without oil. Health food die with a t

The famous "catastrophic failure". I have never seen this on a crossflow before!

The crank case ventilation is excellent :D

All bearings were copper colored with virtually no tin on them, and the think smells like varnish with huge pockets of suspended solids in the oil. The car hadn't been in an accident, and it was a geniune lack of empathy which caused it.

The cam was snapped in two by the flying 250 rod and the rod let go from cylinder six. The second photo is a partial stich-up. I found the rod in the sump! The piston was mounted 30 degrees around as the crank recieved engine breaking from the rod.

I guess its was a chicken and egg thing. Either the main bearing spun first, or the rod bolts had undergone plastic deformation first. I tend to think it was as a result of bearing failure but I'm not sure how to tell... the con rod cap is streatched flat in another plastic deformation. The gudgeon pin was wildly snapped.

The cam cam out the back frost plug, and the crank had sustained terminal damage in the rear counterweight.

There was a chunk half an inch deep taken out the base of the bore on the camshaft side of the block at No 6.

8) well with some jb weld, duct tape, two half dollars, and a good battery i bet you could macgyver that thing back to health.

8) gum wrapper, gum wrapper, oh yes. howver i didnt see anything electrical that had a problem. although you could adjust bearing clearances with one. ok yeah and a gum wrapper.

Some of you guys a too pickey. if breakage didn't get in to the water jacket or a oil gallery. And the main bearings didn't spin, then it just got a couple of holes to fix. Of course I would double check for any cracks in the bore or main web.
I have seen much worse repaired
