Hello,

How do I find out the actual size/displacement/HP from an Inline six from a 78 Fairmont?

Thanks.

Joe

quick reference is the starter, a 250 will have the starter below the oil pan and a 200 will be above the oil pan, but some later 200s are low mount also, another is the water pump 200s have three bolts and 250s have 4 bolts. so if you see a low mount starter in a 78 its probably a 250, but check the water pump to verify that. then if your really ambitious you could check the casting numbers on the starter side of the block. good luck, J.

Just covering my arse there, in case someone went through all the trouble if the original had probs. J

Howdy Joe and All:

A '78 200 is rated at 82 hp @ 3600 rpm. It had an advertized compression ratio of 8:1.

A '78 200 is rated at 92 hp @ 2900 rpm. It had an advertized compression ratio of 8:1.

Being this engine is in a Fairmont I would believe it to be a 200 (aka 3.3). I am no aware of 250 engines being used in Fairmonts, but I try to never say never (and I just said it twice).

Adios, David
