76 MPH!

Ya, I know, not much but I think a little more tuning on the Weber will yield a little better.

I'm still getting some bogging whenever the secondary kicks in and the engine starting back firing at 75. No black smoke just "POP!"

I think I may need a larger secondary main jet and air jet. 140 and 135 just seem a little too small for a 3.3L engine.

Something else.

I've noticed that if I set my timing to 14* of initial advance I can achieve 80MPH but I get some knocking. So I'm down to 10*. Any thoughts?

did you try 12?

do you have the vaccuum advance on your dizzy?

Howdy Chris:

The "Popping" sounds like it could be hanging some valve(s) open at high rpm. Is this a rebuilt engine? What rpm are you running at 75MPH?

It would help if you would review your set-up. I know we've talked before, but I don't remember the details. I guess that's the price of wisdom that comes with age.

Point bounce is another thought. What distributor are you using? How is the vacuum advance hook-up?

Adios, David

thats what I was asking....sound like vaccuum is off if he is using one

David,

I'm running a DS II setup (single point vacuum advance canister plumbed to the carburetor) with a Weber 32/36 carburetor and a poor mans rebuilt 200 (new bearings, valves, lifters, rings etc). And I'm running just over 3100 rpm at 75 MPH.

Even in stock trim with the C4 I could do 75. Then once I got the holley and headers I could do 90-100, but the RPMS were way up. Now with my T5 I cruise at 90 at around 2500-2800 rpms, but I havnt gone much higher than that, it seems to hit a wall
Matt

I need a tach but I have reached 100 easily many times...basically stock

yeah, it was screaming but did NOT reach any "wall"...

Yeah, I think its just the gearing of the World Class T5, I really have a SLOOOW time going anywhere in 5th, lol. I bet I could do 100+ but it takes a long time to get there unless I ride 4th to death.
Matt

is there a different t5 you can add?

I mean, if my 3 spd can do it.....

Yeah there is a different T5, the 4 banger one. Its geared different than the World Class. I can do 100+ it just takes a hell of a long time. When I get it back Ill see what she can do

I've been pondering this while drawing plans today... We never resolved the CR issue, nor determined the start specs (ie, pre-wear) for the cam/timing set. My suspicion is that's why it's running out of breath - inadequate "suck" and lift.

Adam.

It takes me forever to do 90mph. Everything stock. 2.83 gears. Auto.

Fill me in. You must be referring to a previous post.

Oh, and I did some timing adjustments last night and installed larger secondary jets. Much better! This morning I hit 80 MPH without any trouble.

Chaz, don't take this to heart but...does your boss mind you vegging out on this chat forum all day?  :D

-Chris

ofcourse he minds....

as long as you guys dont...LOL

I am a disgruntled worker. promised a raise and return to on staff posiution with bennies and health care LAST YEAR, there is always an excuse as to why they dont hire me back...I am freelance status.

so I do my work that I am given, and then dont activly look for more. Just like the dont activly give me respect.

3 years without a raise.....

Dude, I feel for you...really!

I have this "mutual understanding" between myself and my boss. It's turning into a love/hate relationship. He knows that he couldn't get a better deal with anyone else and I can't seem to find a better job. Well, maybe not better one with just a more "pleasant" atmosphere.

Oh, I'm sending out that plenum today. Don't worry about the money for now. You can send me the funds when you get a chance. I just need to get rid of it a.s.a.p.

'Morning, gents.

Speaking of "vegging out"... :?  Never try to print 100 pages of colour PDF with a Bubble Jet. You'll die of boredom.

I was referring to an earlier episode where you seemed to decide your CR was way below desired. Then, I think you had the head milled some, and still wondered if it was correct. You also asked in vain for late '70s cam specs. I can't recall seeeing wet and dry compression test results after all that. Dialling the cam lift would also be a telling exercise, and measuring the timing chain slop.

So, where are we at in respect to these points?
