k+it probably isnt cool to ask V8 questions but I will give it a shot anyway.

I already have a 66 6-cyl that I've done quite a bit to. It looks great. and drives well. I recently ran into a 67 gt car. Fog lights, disc brakes, 289, the whole bit. I only looked at the car for a little while but the price is right and it was garaged for 30 some years(2nd owner). I know that there was a 200 hp 289 and a 271 HiPo. I was hoping one of you car buffs knew some chracteristics of the hipo engines so I could make an easy identification. It has a blue factory style air cleaner wich seems atypical of the hipo cars I have seen. It is a 3 speed and the first 2 numbers of the VIN Ithink are 7t.
Also, can anyone tell me if it is a posi-trac rear. I always wanted one.
Any help is appreciated,
Paul

If it's a factory Hipo, the fifth letter in the VIn will be a "K". The engine will have a thicker balancer, Unique K-code exhaust manifolds, and usually for that year, the car's VIN will also be stamped into the engine. The hipo's came with an open element chrome top filter. Hipo Mustangs did not come with 3-spds, afik. If it has a trac lod rear, the code on the door plate will usually be a letter, not a number.

There are a lot of other distinguishing characteristics that someone will mention. Best place to ask is www.vintage-mustangs.com

Appreciate the help.

3,000 for those concerned, sound good? I think so but it has a few small rust spots although mech and interior seem good. It desperatly needs paint.

Too low for a GT in good condition. And way too low for any kind of K-code mustang. I've seen a front clip with the serial number sell for that much.

My advice is to beware, seek out a trusted a local expert to help evaluate, and do more research.

K code was only 65 and 66 mustangs i THINK. There is K code motor here but it is more than the aking on the whole car you are mentioning.

The 200 hp would be a "C" code
The 225 hp 4 bb would be a "A" code

there was a 289 HiPo past 66, i think 67 was the last year, since the 289 was replaced with the 302 soon after. the 390 HiPo lasted until 1970 i beleive.

Did some research, VIN says its c code, 289 200 hp. Every things original, minimal rust.

chaz, next time I'm down in Fl I wanna race you.LoL. There's something about the stripe on the side of your mustang that's sayin haha I'm faster lol.Do you think it's be too much to give my '66 Coupe a "Shelby" paint job?The dark blue with white racing stripes and put GT170 in the side instead of GT350 or GT500KR?

You will also have to do some more research to determine if it is an authentic GT. lights, badges, fogs, duals, etc. I don't think a C-code qualifies for the Gt option that year, but ask on VMF and see what the experts think.

who cares..they'll thinkits heavily modified

I am thinking of finding some wacky decals badges for my car

YOU'RE ON with the race.....

how often you come down here? and where do you come to?

I was thining of doing similar on my hood..black stripes from turn signal pods...with a knockout of something

"miami special"?

let me know when you're coming...maybe we can get others to meet up....

My sperm donor er I mean biological dad live in Ocala FL.I'll probably be heading down there when I get the '66 back on the road. That'll be a while lol like mebby this fall sometime. How far are you from Ocala btw?

All of the HiPo cars (Fairlane/Galaxie/Mustang/Cougar) Ford built (whether 289/302/FE series) had either 4-speeds or C-4 class automatics, as far as I know, from 1964-1968. They also had 4-bbl carbs, dual exhaust and a few had ram-air, in various forms. The distinction becomes blurry in the realm of the 351 engines, as they were mixed in construction between Detroit and Canada, depending on demand. The 'better' (more HP) ones came from Detroit.

The differentials were always 8" or 9", because of the higher torque output. Some were posi, some not: check the VIN, like Jack said.

271HP/289ci engines were rather rare, but highly desired, and short-lived. They were not strong enough in the bottom end to take the hi RPM for a long time: the 302ci version fixed up the shortcomings, rather like the 4-bolt main version of GM's 350 made the 350 into a longer-lived engine. On all of the hipo 289 engines I have seen, it is very clearly noted under the hood, on the air cleaner, sometimes inside the passenger compartment, like on the glovebox. Also, all I can remember of the 271/289 Mustangs (and Fairlanes/Galaxies) had an elaborate emblem on the side of the car, proudly identifying the extra HP as a "289" with little racing flags or other "extra" notations, like a multi-color bar.

Even rarer: the were some dual 4-bbl versions of the 289 (2 little 600 CFM carbs) just before the 302 replaced it: there were 2 in Peoria, IL where I went to college in the late '60s. No HP was noted, but they could easily take a Shelby GT350 in the nightly street races on Main Street, and the Shelbys were supposed to be 302/350HP!

I know I'm a little late in this thread (haven't been around much), but I guess I'll still put my $.02 in...

They did make HiPo 289's till '67... they just were'nt as common beacause the 'Stangs started coming with 390's, and I think the HiPo was actually a more expensive option than a 390..

The HP289's had slightly beefier main caps than the reg 289s... they also had dizzys with mech advance only...

reg 289's and 302's have pretty much the same bottom end... only Boss 302's had 4 bolt mains.... IIRC Hi Po 289's also had slightly larger rod bolts..

All HP289 cars also had 9" rears

$3000 is still reasonable for a decent coupe(I'm assuming it is, I did'nt see anyone say what it was)... it mya be a GT clone, but I'd say as long as it's pretty straight and in decent shape it's worth it...

I know GT's in 65 & 66 only came with A code(225hp) or K code(hi po 271hp).. I can't remember for sure, but I think in '67 they could be had with the C code (200hp 289 2v...
