Ignition questions

Well ok, i've finally got my falcon running super smooth and happy (fixed vacuum advance FTW), now though i've been looking at the better ignition systems that are offered to replace my stock one thats upgraded with pertronix.

So my first question is about how much of a gain would i honestly see using the DUI compared to just the Duraspark upgrade? This is on a fairly (or at least for now) stock motor, that will have stock internals but might see a header, definetly a 2 barrel carb, and possibly even a low boost turbo setup. For now though i'm mainly interested in how much it might help stock?

My next questions involve little upgrades i could do for right now, i'm still using the 40 year old coil, would it be worth buying a new one (like would it make a difference in gas mileage or slightly in power?). Also what about plug wires, would it even be useful to put bigger then 7mm wires on there?

I never had a Duraspark so I can't compare, but I installed the FSP DUI a few months back and it starts quicker and runs much smoother than the stock distributor. I also picked up 3 tenths in et at the drags and this is on a stock 250 with just a header installed.

wow Gene i didn't know your 250 was stock with just a header on it. Actually i was thinking about what yours had on it earlier today.

8) optimizing the ignition system doesnt necessarily gain much of anything in performance or mileage. where your biggest gains come from is the long term consistency offered by electronically controlled ignitions. since oyu have no points to wear out, not condenser to short out, and the dwell angle doesnt change over time as the rubbing block wears. any gains you see other than longevity are due to plugs firing with higher voltage at the plug gap, lighting off the fuel mixture easier. also most electronic ignitions have a multi strike capability, limited though some may be, thus creating multiple flame fronts for more efficient combustion.

the biggest advantage the DUI has over the duraspark is everything is in one compact package, needing only one wire to feed the system. also parts tend to be a bit easier to find, though only a bit easier. it is also much easier to change the advance curve on the DUI since the advance weights are easily accessible.

I did the duraspark install with all new parts and at about a hundred bucks its a fifth of the price of the dui. The car definetly runs smoother and drives smoother I cant say I feel a huge difference in power but I didnt have it dynoed.

Your sophistication outstrips mine by a wide amount and I respectufull defer to you in general. However, an electronic ignition does lead to more efficient combustion of fuel. The mythic David Vizard says that points ignition has a misfire rate of up to 15%. Electronic ignition nearly erases misfires. Thus a rise in ignition consistency and cumbustion leads to noticeable gains in both energy output and fuel economy. At the very least, you will see this when you have to set your idle way back to keep it at 750-800 RPM after installing an electronic ignition system.

Sadly, this amount of improvement WILL NOT induce whiplash off the line.

yeah i would never expect any huge improvement like whiplash, though honestly the little six will whip you back pretty well as it is in first so no complaints there :P.

Dont know about DUI, but DuraSpark II made a big difference on my 250. Starts quicker hot or cold, has a lot more power, and gas mileage jumped from about 12 to 18 mpg! Running an upgraded coil & 8mm wires.
