Installing a Fuel Pump

Newbie question time.

I am attempting to install new Fuel Pump on my recently rebuilt 200cid. Unfortunately, there was no fuel pump on the engine when I got the car.

The only way I can get it to seat correctly (unless I am missing something) is opposite the way I see it in all pictures. Below shows a picture of mine.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

Looks downside-up. If you flip it and feel resistance laying it on there it might be because the cam lobe is pressing on the pump lever.
 
Clean engine bay… nice find.

Don't be afraid of any pressure as you're trying to seat the pump. Like JackFish mentioned, the lobe may be in position to press against the pump, but it should still seat.
 
Putting it on can be a PITA, because of the lever arm on the pump. You may have to push on it pretty hard to get it to actually catch a few threads on the bolts.

Then just pull it on the rest of the way.

I believe there are older style pumps and newer style pumps. I have found some pumps will only install with the hose fittings up like the 70's Mavericks had and some pumps will only install with the hoses down like 60's Mustangs had. The angle of the pump lever determines which way they go.

The pump as you show it is correct for a 67-8 Mustang and I wish I could find one like that. The last couple I have bought install hoses up. If you want to trade an almost new pump with hoses up for the one you show in the picture I would gladly do it.

Yup, there must be 5 or 10 different fuel pumps, some go up and some go down. From what I've heard, they all interchange - as long as they're mounted the way the pump is supposed to go (up or down).

Anybody ever lay fuel pumps side-by-side and compare? I've been looking for info on the various types...
 
the napa fule pump i got last year was a little diffrent that the one i pulled off. it mounted the same way but the "arm" on the inside was a little shorter. ive put about 7,000 miles on it without issue though
 
I understand using a little persuasion to get the fuel pump on, but since it was not there to begin with, I have no frame of reference. Thanks for all the suggestions. Just to be clear, I am including a picture of my fuel pump.

Also... here is the rear of my engine. I would appreciate any clarification on how the temperature sending unit is installed. I know it is the brass fitting, but not sure where the line runs...



Any other guidance is welcome

:D The steel line shown in the second picture IIRC goes to the modulator on your transmission.It hooks to manifold vacuum.

From what I see in your picture, that fuel pump looks just like mine. That one should install as it appears in the picture (hoses up). The lever that goes into the block should ride on the top of the camshaft (angled up as in picture, not down).

As for your other question, woodbutcher told you where the steel line goes from the trans (to the intake manifold vacuum), but I believe you were referring to the sensor located just behind the last sparkplug, correct?

On mine, it connects to the wire harness that comes off of the coil and distributor. My harness from the coil and distributor has two extra connections. One goes to this sensor, the other goes to the sensor in the block (oil pressure, I think?). Someone else will know better than I do, I'm sure.

note the difference in pump arm length and angle. According to the numbers, both will fit the falcon six.
 
Simon, thanks for the pic! I take it that one of the pumps mounts downward? I'm betting that the short-arm pump on the right does, it's similar to mine.

I'm using one of these style pumps, which mounts as shown.

actually, both pumps pictured in the link above are supposed to mount upwards. Guess I need to rig them up in the vice and check how far each pump arm travels. Maybe that equals the different angles and lengths?

anyhow, I just bought (for about three abe lincolns) a used early-style pump like yours (albeit from a 289) with the canister-type filter. Maybe I can find an electric pump small enough to will fit in there... the facet pumps might just fit if I can find a way to change those hose connectors. If everything turns out well, I'll post my results in the hardcore tech forum.
 
Just replaced my fuel pump about 2 hours ago. Yours is upside down. You will all be impressed that I man-handled it into place. I swore too. No blood though (nobody's perfect).

If the pump cam is in the wrong position, have fun. I did...
