Has anyone else heard of Ion Sensing Igniton? From what I heard in class it sounds great, but I have no idea how hard it would be to adapt it for use on out motors (probably not practical) But it would be a great system, from my understanding it can detect if the individual cylinder is running rich or lean and adjust accordingly, and act as a knock sensor. I forget all the other details but its basically a coil on plug type setup and more than likely you'd need a custom stand alone ecu and have to mount a crank position sensor.. but hey yeah I have too much time ;)

Think there was a company claiming that they built and sold such a system. Jacob? Jacobson? :?

After the hair then goes the memory.

I know Delphi has one and I heard Isuzu ran one and really late models, but I know they make it. I just "wonder" if its possible to adapt it for use on out applications. It seemed a simpiler system, but probably more expensive...

the second gen Isuzu 3.5L and 3.2L v-6 have that. I know it makes thos engines realy picky about what spark plugs they run on. OPerty much if you dont put OEM plugs in em they trip the CEL and the engine goes into limp home mode...

Jacobs claims that they sense resistance each time a cylinder fires and adjusts spark strength accordingly. Theay also combine that with multiple sparks.

8) yep, that is the one, and it can be all yours for like $400(iirc) for their top of the line system.

From what I understand, the Ignition control module runs another 400 volts or so after the cylinder fired and can adjusts according to the resistance, add if that 400 volts cant jump the gap, then it determines the cylinder didnt fire, so yeah putting differnt plugs than specified would affect the resistance. But it also helps adjust the A/f ratio, I cant remember every little detail.. been awhile since I was in class

MSD, and maybe some others, are using this technology now, according to the latest issue of Engine Masters (a copy of which you want to buy while you can!!). Dr. Christopher Jacobs, who made his first pile designing medical equipment, formed Jacobs Electronics to make ignition systems (he was an amateur racer, and put himself through engineering school working in a garage), and sold that to do something else, was the inventor of the technology, or at least its application to auto ignitions. The company had a great product, but I hear there were some unhappy customers due to QC and/or consumer relations issues.
