Is there a freeze plug in the head by the fire wall on my 223 ?
like a fool...i put on a new water pump this sumer and forgot to add antifreeze...now theres water squirting out of the head next to the fire wall...i can feel a small bolt holding on to something round like a freeze plug...and thats where the water is squirting.
it froze up pretty good this week here...but tomorrow it should be about 40 degrees...hoping to thaw it out with minimum damage...
hey thanks all

It could be one of those rubber freeze plugs with a stud and nut in the center to expand it. Maybe the water froze and pushed it out or the metal on the inside rusted out. Good Luck

If I remember right, there is a big round freeze plug in the back face of the head on my 223. I replaced all the freeze plugs when the engine was on the garage floor. Theres not enough space between the back of the head and the firewall to install one properly IMO without pulling the head.

:D Years ago that problem came up with a friends car.He just took a hole saw and cut a hole in the firewall and changed the core plug and then used a gromet of the proper size to close the hole.

That's definitely the freeze plug, I blew one out of my 57 F-100 a few years back and had to replace it, all you have to do is unscrew the bolt which will release if from the block. Screwing it in compresses the rubber between the metal and it spreads out grabbing the block. Simple plug....
