junky fuel pumps?

ok so it looks like anothe pump died on me. this is the fourth one in as many months....

I am looking at maybe swapping pump arms like dan did but didn't know what he started with and used to do the swap. these things seem to be dieing every 6 weeks or so which is pissing me off.

Maybe it is not the pump...

1.) common. Have you replaced the rubber hose between the frame and the pump? Old hoses leak air - mimicking a bad pump. There is sometimes a hose between the gas tank and the steel gas line on the frame. Re-new it too.

2.) also common. Do you have an in-line filter between the frame and the pump? The filter stops crap from the gas tank from clogging the fuel pump... Which of course kills the pump.

3.) Rare. Check the fuel pump camshaft lobe for full lift. If it is worn down, a new pump will work until it sags a little, and then it just seems to not do the job. Stick you finger in the hole in the block for the pump's lever. If the cam's eccentric is rough, check farther.

Good Luck

1. all new rubber hose this past summer.

2. filter before pump....replaced this before the pump (I have known junk in tank.....metal shavings from cutting filler neck hole)

3. cam/motor is less than a year old.

even worse....

I replaced the pump and it is doigng fine in town but at highway speeds I am starving for fuel randomly....drove 10 miles then it started up...will stop motor after 2-3 miles or ever 1/4 miles down the road. simply turning off motor (or it stalling out) and letting it sit for a few seconds and restarting fixes issue most of the time. pump and filter are new (pump only 24 hours old) I says to me that I am having something closing up on the line over higher flow (clutching motor and letting it idle befor eit chokes off will let it drive longer)

this is all a new thing that started in the 2 days.

You gave the answer to your problem in your last post.

You said (I have known junk in tank.....metal shavings from cutting filler neck hole)

That with other sediment is probably plugging up the in tank sock filter.
When it sits for a bit the stuff falls away from the sock filter then when the engine is running, the fuel flow brings the crap back to the filter & restricts the fuel flow.

You've taken care of everything else from the tank forward, now the tank itself should be flushed & cleaned.

it is a tank I fabbed up.....has no sock filter on it. and the shavings are LARGE flakes of metal. this car has been running fine for 4 months on this tank and other than clogging a filter every month or so I have had no other problems from it. there is no fine sediment just large flakes (think chips form drilling a hole) but now that I look back on it I think I might not have gottne the filter on too well (before pump) since it was cold out I am thinking that the rubber was too stiff to tighten up well and once I get the motor warm it is sucking in air. I is gonna be near 50 today so after I finish my breakfast I am going out to tighten it up the filter some and see if that was it.

Sooo, have you changed the filter that screws into your carb?

About 2 inches long, srews into the carb and the rubber gasline plugs onto it.

50 degrees ABOVE??? In mid December??? Obviuosly you don't live in ND

Good Luck

Out of curiosity, what carburetor to you have? My car does the exact same thing. I have a Maverick with 250/C4 and holley 5200 on adapter with 6 into 1 headers. Everything is new. Gas tank is clean.

I have a 350 holley. has been running fine in the blow through setup for 3 months nearly until this friday. there is no inlet filter on my carb. there is NO debri at all in the carb itself (I even pulled th eneedle and seat ot cheack that) I am runningout of ideas here guys and I need this to get me home in 3 days (250 mile trip)

I'd suggest checking the lines from the tank to the fuel pump, if only because I had to repair a leak resulting from corrosion. Replacement was neoprene.
There could be some crud in the tube lodging up against a bend.

You do know that there is another filter on most Holleys that you get to by removing the large nut that the fuel line attatches to?

Its kind of a coppery mesh looking thing about 1" long and a 1/2" in diameter :D :D :D

Just a thought!

yeah I have removed the sintered brass filter.....not there at all anymore

found the problem....the pump is not drawing anything at all (with motor idling I can hardly feel any suckion on the inlet of the pump)

new pump will be in tomorrow and will go on to at least get me around better

You sure your line isn't collapsing shut under high load and running the pump dry? Have had that problem with various engines in the past. Just a thought from what little I have read of this forum and your specific problem. I have none of your specifics but sounds like you got some rubber line involved somewhere in the system and a fuel (or air hungry) engine will collapse rubber lines and pinch them off to nothing. Just a thought you may have overlooked.

Ok, so where is the best place to buy a high quality fuel pump for the six? Not neccesarily a hi-volume or hi-performance, but a good quality fuel pump? I'm sure I could get one from a Ford dealer, but at what cost?

with the rubber line removed from the pump and the car idleing on what is in the fuel bowl the pump does not suck anything pretty much. all the trouble started with a new pump so I am not suprised.

I liked my older pump from the 170 but I hear it is not available anymore. it had a threaded outlet on it which was handy.

from the looks of it I would at least stay away form autozone and their pumps....heck just about any of their stuff for that matter
