killed a fuel pump!!!

I don't think it was boost related....

since I put in the tank I fabbed up I have been picking up shavings from it. the background:

pump #1 this was the pump I put on in 2001 when I got the car as the pump on it was shot. put 40k on the pump until abot a month after I put in the tank and it died...was full of shavings from when I cut the filler neck. cleaned it out and ran for about 1 mile (IE enough to make it a pain to walk somewhere) replaced it with a new pump and was fine until....(mid june)

pump #2 ran low on gas and killed the pump after 30 days. installed filter before pump at this time to catch and trash getting to it. (this was late july)

pump #3 went out today...low on gas and found filter PACKED full off shavings from hole saw STILL!! figured I would bypass filter (after putting 4 gals in tank by foot) and get it to the parts store across town to replace it. started it up and 15 secs later killed the pump...

seems to only give problems when I get low on gas as it picks up all the trash then as it slooshes around. I had sealed the tank after welding it up but drilled/cut the filler neck hole with a hole saw after sealer cured. Looking at a couple of the following now

1. replace pre-filter and blow air back through line to remove any blockage.

2. drop a couple cow magnets in the tank to hopefully trap any trash in there. I have a removable lid for the pickup and sender (bolts on) that I can fit my arm in to retrieve the magnets in 6 weeks when I get home to hopefully pick up any trash on them.

3. run a bigger prefilter?

god this sucks. at least I have a thread in nipple for the boost reference so all I have to do is run a tap in the existing hole to mod it. one thing is for sure I think I need to start keeping it full from now on!!

edit: once I get home from work I will cut open the filter and post some nasty pics of all the junk in it

ok so I got bored at work and found a razor blade in the desk to cut the filter open. found out a couple things....

1. I had it plumbd backwards....

2. it wasn't PACKED full but the pleating was full of metal shavings (this was COARSE saw shavings from the hole saw)

3. some of the paper element was deteached fomr teh housing. this was noted back some small black flecks in the "filtered" portion through the transparent casing

so looks like I will switch fomr a plastic housing filter to a EFI type metal filter.

I have a magnet you can borrow if you make it out this way. I can help. Its an extendable (to about 2 or 3 feet) swivel magnet, with about a 1/2 inch magnet on the tip end. Ive cleaned out oil pans still in the car, and it worked fine once cleaned, and didnt clog the oil pump or screen.

You can just run it down, and move it around, and pull it up. Its pretty strong for that size magnet. Youll get out 90% or more with some time invested.

At least its not an efi in-tank pump (TC?) Those are the ultimate pain to swap.

Ill go look for it (extendable magnet) this week, all my tools are in different homes as of lately.

I got one of those at home..just not here...

I am thinking just a bigger GOOD filter will do the trick for me.....just gonna have a spare on hand at all times. I look at this as being a good thing....better now than on the expressway in chicago....

You gotta get that stuff out sometime in the near future, or at least Id advise.

Bring filters too, wherever you go.

well it only rears it's ugly arse head when I get on fumes.....so I think as long as I keep it topped off I will be fine. I think I am passing onthe magnets in the tank and will just use some filters to get it out....rather have it out for sure instead of jsut contained in it.

Use an electric pump in the rear, with a surge tank of about 1qt. Make a big mesh filter out of stainless gauze.

I don't expect the magnet would get everything. Some of the shavings will be the heavy galvanising.

Cheers, Adam.

dropping that tank is a pain....gotta remember it is a 30 gal tank made ofmr 14ga sheet (.080") EMPTY it weighs about 60# and all I have here to drain it is a 2 gal gas can. plus my building only has a gravel parking lot....

picke up a new filter and pump and will be putting it on in a hour or so (letting the thick burger digest)

I also ordered a 60 a 55 jets for the holley to try out. I have a 40 I am gonna try and see how it is...I know it will be WAY leaner but I have my timing dialed back a bunch so I am hoping it will be ok. kinda looking to get some much better milage this coming week with all my driving. oh yeha I also know it it WAY rich on the 65's since when I pull out of the drive on a cold motor it pulls WAY stronger until it warms up....then your eyes start to burn at stop lights.

replaced pump and filter (larger metal inline filter) fired up fine. BUT I had the #40 jets in and took them right out....motor would not even free rev with them in there. so the 65's are back in. my 55 and 60 jets will be here on weds morning just in time for me to try them out before hitting the road.

is there a way to change jets without dumping gas EVERYWHERE? my fuel bowl is right over the turbine and not likeing the idea of dropping gas all over it when it is hot. I have been pulling the pump supply line and letting it idle out most of the gas but it still drops some.

Always let things cool down enough to keep from igniting the gas!!! I always stuff a rag under the carb and loosen one of the bottom bowl screws and let the gas drible into the rag. When the bulk of the fuel has drained, I replace the rag with a fresh one, take the gas soaked rag outside to dry then remove the bowl allowing any remaining gas to soak into the fresh rag.

ok so I got a NEW filter installed before the pump which was also replaced.

yesterday I get a block form my house and th eneedle gets a shaving in it flooding me out...luckily on the holley this is a 2 min repair (while sitting at a stop light)

then this morning it does it TWICE in 3 blocks.....and then once on the way home...

on the way home when it did it was when I ran trough tht egears coming out of a light up to about 45mph....so the needle would have been opened farther letting it in. so unless my new filter had no element I somehow got a TON of shavings up in my fuel line between the pump and carb (bent up 5/16 hardline with a single union in the middle) right now it is just a inconvinece thing

Guys, holley makes a fuel bowl with removeable plugs so you can change the jets without removing the bowl.

This is the special jet screwdriver holley supplys to loosen the jet, retain it then remove it, & then reinstall the size jet you need.

These are available from summit or jegs.

This a copy from my old post. William

For you owners with a holley 2300 carburetor-350 cfm-500cfm carburetors.
Summit has the quick change jet kits bowls hly-34-25 for the 350 cfm carbs. this bowl is the gold color bowl.
For you with a 500 cfm carb which comes in shiny color, your only choice is the chrome quick change bowl hly-34-509.
also available is the fuel bowl see thru sight plug with o'ring seal hly-26-113. these kits from holley come with metering block gaskets & the special screwdriver for the jet removel.
Enclosed are the pictures of the chrome quick change bowl. William

it is on my list of things once I get a full time job agian. would make my jets changes super easy then as I could just catch the fuel in a jar/can draining it from the screw hole and then just pour it back in the vent and be on my way for another test n tune pass.
