knockknockknock--update

The front 3 rod bearings apparently got starved for oil They are black like they were HOT. The back 3 are still grey colored. I'm going to button it all back together so I can drive it on the trailer.

Oil passage blocked somewhere, huh?

weird.

Yep. I should have known that something was off after sitting for so long.

I have started engines that haven't run for 30 years, it doesn't mean the oil passages should be blocked.

Yup. Something else caused this. Time to get out the rifle cleaning brushes.

I kept to myself, because I didn't want to be a pessamist on this one :)

But Good job. That is a professionally waxed bearing if I have ever seen one.

I've never been a fan of half measures

I'm winning an auction for an engine now with 5 days left. My bid is only 40 bucks and it's not been used up yet. We'll see. It's been outside but all I need is the crankshaft, that's worth 40 easy. If it even gets that high.

Which reminds me, I need to pull the oilpan off of the junker 200 that I have to look at it. I forgot I had it

Well crap...pulled the oilpan off of the extra engine and saw what there was to see. There was a little rust in there, nothing too serious. So pulled the rod caps off of the cylinders that were up, they looked great. Went ahead pulled the balancer and flexplate, took the timing junk off, the oilpump and main caps. Then the last rod cap and that FRIGGIN BEARING was spun!!! Everything else looked great.

Should have known it wouldn't be that easy...

At least now I have a couple bearing shells that aren't an inch and a half wide, I'll put those in so I can run it onto a trailer instead of a using a come-along. Almost had it put together and it started raining on me. Today isn't my day.

All right, pulled the engine and tranny yesterday. I was surprised that it only took a little over an hour. Sat the tranny aside and tore the engine down. The cam bearings look fine, but all of the mains and cam bearings were shot.

I have some ordered, they should be here this week. I also have a crank and rods. I'm going to linish the journals and clean all of the oil passages extra good. Might do some slight porting, not sure if I want to fool with it or not.

Oh, incidentally, found out the oil starvation issue. The pickup was crudded up pretty bad. I got a wire brush and went to town with some solvent, you wouldn't believe how much junk came out of it. Black, baked on crap. I soaked it for a day before cleaning it and it was still hard to clean.

I'm going to rebuild the tranny while I have it out. Well, a friend of mine that's been doing transmission work for the past 20 years is going to do it. I think I'll just help him with it because I don't want to screw it up. I'm sure that I could do it, but why take a chance?

Might as well paint the engine bay and engine while I'm at it too.

Okay, you lost me at the cam bearings  Explain please :?

Sorry--rod bearings were crapped out. Cams were fine. 8)

Trying to figure out the correct head and block color--I think it should be either black or a natural finish. There is definitely no paint on it now, and can't make out any on the oilpan either. The valve cover and air cleaner are bright yellow, which is correct. I like that "cast iron" paint, so I might just paint it like that.
