Ok guys this is a werid one. When I drive my car sometimes it has power sometimes it doesn't meaning when I hit the gas I fell like am going to crap myself and sometimes it like real slow to catch up to speed. One more thing I just put in a new gas tank my old gas tank was in rough shape and full of small pieces of dirt and the fuel sending unit filter that was in the old tank fell off into. So am wondering if any dirt might have into the carb and causeing my problem.

Uhh, ummm, I'll just mention adding a simple inline filter just before fuel pump can help remedy the dirty fuel tank/line problems. Generic clear plastic filters will show you if there are contamination problems. I've used the clear filters continually with no problem both on tank suction side and pressure side before carbs.

The intermittent nature of your cars' problem , can be a pain to troubleshoot. I'd start simple, check vacuum advance operation, new plugs, points (sic) and cdsr, maybe carb kit - but not all at once, try to nail down what conditions/remedies affect problem, keep some TP in glovebox.

8) powerband is right, intermittent problems are the toughest of problems to diagnose. i also would start with adding a fuel filter, and changing it often perhaps once a month. you might also check the fuel pump output and see if that might be part of the problem. the easy way to do this is to tape a fuel pressure gauge to the windshield and see what the fuel pressure does under various conditions. go through the ignition system and make sure it is operating properly. you might also pop the top off the carb and see what is in the float bowl, sometimes something as small and stupid as a fly wing will cause big problems.

by the way powerband, what carbs are you using?

There is only one way to get dirt out of the carburetor............ :D

I would first check the ignition advance mechanism, make certain that it is functioning properly all of the time.

Since you had a fuel problem, I'd highly recommend replacing/cleaning everything downstream of the tank. My clear fuel filter is on the pressure side of the pump, to prevent any chance of cavitation. Sediment in the bowl will do strange things.

It wouldn't hurt to check every electrical connection. Pay close attention to any ground wires, such as the one from the engine to the chassis.

Ok guys I did another test drive and found out that when am driving and I want to make the car have more power I have to hit the gas pedal like 2 times then it will start moving like it suppose to could that mean my fuel pump is getting bad.

8) it more likely means that you have a carb issue.

Accelerator pump.

He's saying the accelerator pump is faulty. Rebuild the carb and make sure there is a new pump in the part assortment.

If you don't know, and I may be yapping in the wind, the pump is a little atomizer (sprayer) that pushes a slug of gas in the carb throat when you push on the accelerator. And like little bitty spray pumps, they work sometimes and sometimes not, especially if they are made of plastic and soak in gasoline for a few decades. (Especially new gasoline with ethanol = alcohol/solvent.)

Sure. Why not. But as long as you are inside why not do a little cleaning and dusting? You might check the filter too, to see if it is partially plugged.

one more question is it ok to drive like that were i have to keep hitting the gas pedal twice sometimes til i get the funds to get a new accelerating pump don't want to break anything.

What could you brake, its all mechanical. There's no computer to overload. The car is supposed to go fast when you accelerate, so I don't see a problem. I would agree with everyone else; Carburetor. Clean it or rebuild it.

Pumping the pedal won't get you the funds but it won't hurt the car either. Heck, my dad did it for 5 years before he actually wrecked the car. Immanently fixable; he chose not to.

Dont worry guys I will clean and I never know these little 6 bangers had power Thanks for all the help again guys. Yeall grow up with the best looking cars

It looks like I just need to clean my clean my carb and change my gas filter now shes back to normal. Am probably still going to change my accleartion pump. Thanks again guys

Well I got the the accleration pump and put it in but it got better but sometimes it still struggles.

Did you clean out the insides of the carb, especially the drilled passages? With carbs, especially the Webers, cleanliness isn't next to godliness, it IS godliness.
