I'm looking to either fabricate or purchase a lifting rig for an I6 engine. How should it look? Who has one? Anyone.....Anyone......ZZ

ZZ,

Oh you're not snoring... That's your signature! BG

I take it what you want is not the engine hoist itself, but the plucker that attaches to the engine.

'69 and newer engines have an "eye" bolted to the rear of the intake manifold, and on the driver's side to the front of the block between the distributor and the water pump a seconf "eye is bolted on. However, I don't think that a '64 has the bosses to bolt these on. Go find a Fairmont or a Granada to have a look-see.

The easiest way to pluck your engine is to pull a head bolt from opposite corners of the head, and then put a stout chain between the bolts and snug them down again. Leave enough slack in the chain to hook your engine hoist to the chain.

There is a picture of a Ford-made engine lift that looks like it hooks under the intake manifold in the Shop Manual, but I've never actually seen one.

Good Luck

Thanx for the info. I'm still researching some designes and I'll get back with yall. thanx again...ZZ

ZZ,
Check out jcwhitney.com, they have a device that I call a spreader bar. It's adjustable to move the center of gravity while you are lifting. Look under hoists and cranes. About $50.

Same thing Joe said but, go to the local parts store, find someone who has actually worked on a car (good luck), and ask for an "engine tilter" (AKA "spreader bar"). That's what the kid/punk at NAPA called it. One of the handiest tools I ever bought. The NAPA here had one for around $40.00. Mine had crank handle on the end, and made plucking and stuffing the last engine+tranny a one man operation.
