I have done a lot of reading on here over the last few weeks and I have some ?s about a duraspark conversion. If I am running the original type carb with a load o matic dizzy, Where do I get the vacuum from for the advance on the duraspark? I have read alot abut manifold vs ported vacuum and am unclear on whether or not I can run a duraspark with the original carb or not. I am going to change the head out to a later 200 head and add a 2v carb, do I need to wait until I do this conversion to run the duraspark setup? Give me some guidance here please.

Some people run the Duraspark with the 1100 carb, and use the manifold as the vacuum source. This isn't the intentional source though. Some guys think it runs fine, but others say it's not what you want to do.

You may just want to wait to install the Duraspark until you have the carb with the right source. Because lets you go with the manifold vacuum and it runs but not great, you could end up spending time fiddling with the timing and timing curve more than was worth your while, given the later upgrade to the carb.

It makes sense that if you're going to go to the Duraspark (for better performance, etc) you might as well do it right all the way. On the other hand if your current dizzy is giving you a headache then you could always just plunge forward with the Duraspark.

The simple answer is "Yes". The crutch is to run the vacuum advance line from the distributor to a full manifold vacuum source. On an otherwise stock engine this may be too much advance at idle and at cruise. You can compensate by reducing your initial advance setting.

If reducing initial advance hurts your low speed power too much, you could also try running without vacuum advance (Be sure to plug the carb tap) and setting your initial advance at 16 to 20 degrees BTC.

The DuraSpark II will give you centrifugal advance and a much stronger spark at all engine speeds. While it isn't a perfect marriage with a SCV vacuum signal, it can be made to work pretty well, and adds many advantages over the Load-a-matic.

Try a one step colder spark plug heat range and open the gaps to .045". Read your plugs often. Is this a daily driver? or sunny day cruiser?

David, This is going to be a daily driver. I am not in a hurry to change out the dizzy now, I have an original that has been converted to a Pertronix II and it gives me no trouble. I plan to change the head and add a 2v carb(probably an Autolite 2100) so I know I will need it then. I have ordered the recurve kit from Mister Gasket and plan to do that also. I have plenty to keep me busy on it right now though. I am doing the 3G upgrade and adding an electric fan to help my A/C out. Today I put in newer seats from an '69 Mustang. Talk about more comfort, wow.
