LOM dizzy question

I just got my "Falcon 6 Handbook" and , according to that , have determined I cannot directly replace the LOM with the later cenrifical advance distributor [1/4" oil pump drive verified therefore smaller diameter hole in the block] as frequently suggested for better performance . Can the later distributor be adapted without extensive machine shop work or the internals swapped over ? Can the LOM be recurved or is the Pertronix [already in] about all that can be done ? The engine runs well ; just thinking of improvements .

IIRC, there is an aftermarket DUI dizzy for the older blocks with the smaller diameters.

I see C.I. has something that could fit in DSII and DUI . A short search does not turn up anything anywhere else . I was hoping for a less expensive and less bulky option . I might consider the DSII version but the DUI is based on GM's HEI which I found to be more troublesome when I was a working mechanic .

yeah, i think all the options besideds the pertronix upgrade are monsters compared to the small LOM distributor cap. I don't recall anything for sure that is of similar size, maybe a DS1, but then it's a bigger shaft and block modification again.

I have not tried this but I think it could be done if you can find a 68 to 74 point distrib core. Use your distrib's shaft together with the later parts you would than have the good vac. advance unit. You could again use a Pertronix kit and you would have a full upgrade.

There is also an another old way to go too you can also use a MSD control box and good coil I used to use a #5 or 6 box with these old point distribs it works very well and the points don't wear as much (much less current across them).

I run the D.U.I. in my early six, it was my only option after pertronix. It did wonders.
A ds2 can be had cheaper using junkyard parts in a later six, but realistically, after buying all new parts the DUI is actually not much more.
But that is just because I don't like junkyard parts for certain things and ignition is definitely one of those areas.

As mentioned above , I saw that [and the DUI which I would avoid] - too many $$$ for me right now .

Well for reference, I talked to my machinist about what it would take to set up the ds2 and he quoted around $150, to bore out that little hole. Said it was a weird operationbut could be done with some tooling. But said it wouldn't cost too much if you can find someone to mill down the dizzy to work, then you just need to use a later oil pump.

170-3tree , For ease of installation , I might look at the DSII kit next year when my SSI payments start up unless someone can tell me the HEI [DUI is based on HEI] rotor burn through problem was solved . Machining the block is not a good option for a running , driving vehicle .

I believe that problem is pretty nonexistent especially if you aren't always rapping out the little motor. Even then, I haven't had the issue. I don't believe mpg has either. And he has used his for far longer than me.
IIRC Mike and I had a conversation about the DUI and he says that the DUI has a lot of hei system faults fixed.

EDIT, the only reason I mentioned boring that hole is because its info for someone. I had my engine out, if I didn't it wouldn't be an option for ne either.

Just a reminder - the only thing that makes a DSII different from a DSI is the larger cap and adapter. Lost them, install a DSI cap, and ta-dah! you have a DSI.

(Not counting the built-in ignition advance curve, but then they're all over the place anyway...)

Easiest way is to turn down the later DSII shaft, then swap pumps and driveshafts. Don't mill the block - too hard to do.

The Pertronix does not affect the vacuum advance . Is this for your Mustang ? There seems to be a glitch in the catalogs ; I don't find the LOM advance listed for the Mustang . But looking at Falcon listings for the 170 ; I see it at O'Reilly [BWD V306] for 27.99 [special order] and RockAuto [Standard VC12] for 17.89 + s/h . Look at the pictures and be sure it's the right one . Other places may have it too .
