Just scored this off ebay for the sweet price of 40$ and ill be possibly rebuilding it and putting it on my old 67, maybe itll be in good enough shape to go on without rebuilding though, probably still tear it down and clean it. I like that its an original carb from ford that hasnt been molested by any shadetree mechanics, though. Also has a manual choke, now i can do something with that hole i have in my dash :D

Whats up with the big tube coming off the carb where the bowl vent rod usually goes though? I may pull the top end off my current carb as the top end is in really good shape on mine, just the bottom needs help. Im excited. I actually prefer manual choke too, so it all works out. Tired of messing with the auto choke coil, pulldown, heat tube and all that.

My guess is that would be some sort of CA emissions thing. I did not think they were going nuts about vapors back then but maybe since it was a replacement it was required?

Maybe, i dont see the point of it though. I thought the bowl vent rod was to open up under accell to prevent a vaccum from forming inside the bowl and help fuel flow at WOT? Now its just open all the time. Maybe it runs better like that. Looks like it has the SCV and everything i need, though.

If I remember correctly that is a carb originally destined for an Econoline van. Since Econolines had the engine essentially inside the passenger compartment, to avoid fumes in the cab they had that metal tube and then a small vent hose attached to it and ran under the vehicle and into the open air. It will still work on your Mustang as-is, but it would mean a lot more to an Econoline owner. Many Econolines have had their carbs replaced over the years for replacements without that tube and they wonder why they get a gas smell in the cab when the engine sits hot but they see no gas leaks.

Thanks Mustang6, i swear you people on here are like a ford encyclopedia or something, lol. :D I may not even use the top of the carb, like i said the top on mine is in really good shape and im happy with the performance, just not the erratic idle. Ill probably save the top end and build another carb with it and ebay it. Ive got alot of 1100 carbs but most of them are corroded in the top or either have the accel pump siezed up/broken in them and various problems with the bottom. Im excited like a kid before christmas though, finally get a manual choke carb for an auto trans like ive been looking for, all mine have 1 diaphram on the side.

Compare your carb parts- I think you might find the little linkage plate on the choke shaft is unique to the manual choke, so you might need to keep that top for the manual choke. I have a friend with an Econoline with a manual choke, I should check and see if he has the Econoline top, if not maybe you would be interested in a non-Econoline manual choke top part in good condition to swap for yours?

Eh, probably wont decide what im gonna do till i actually see the carb. To me it looks like the tube is just stuck in there and i could probably wiggle it out and put the factory bowl vent rod there. Depending on how clean it is i may just throw it on and see what it does. :?

No problem- I'm guessing you are probably right and the tube will just wiggle out- I can't see Ford making a special top just for one vehicle application if they didn't have to. Good luck with your new carb!
