loose rotor on my 144

The distributor rotors that I have purchased from NAPA (2) fit very loose on the shaft. I can rock the rotor back and forth an 1/8" or more. There is a spring clip on the dist. shaft as well that seems a little worn. The dwell seems to be steady, however, I am having trouble with low end torque.

Is this common-every other engine I have tuned has a very snug fitting rotor. Anybody have experience with this?

The spring clips on the distributor tend to bend and break. Unless the clip is in good shape, the rotor will be loose.

The other possibility is that you got the wrong rotor. The later rotor will fit loosely over the distributor and will nver be as tight as it should be.

thanx for the reply. According to NAPA only one rotor number is listed from 60 thru 63 for the 144 (the part is made in MEX maybe I should try a different supplier). Is there an aftermarket source for the spring clip that fits under the rotor and on the dist shaft ?

I had to very carefully bend my clip to make the rotor snug on my 63 mercury 170 that i currently am using.
