lowering engine?

I'd like to lower my engine about an inch or so. The trans is at an angle and keep breaking mounts, and it wouldn't hurt the handling, either. It doesn't look like the stock mounts give much leeway. Can they be adjusted? Are there other options? I know Harry was making some, but I'm not altogether confident that I will recieve them since I haven't seen him around here lately.

Some people have lowered their motor up to 1/2" by grinding (oval shape) the stock motor mount holes. For lowering more then that I'd think you should be able to get a couple scraps of flat stock steel and weld them to the motor mount surface that bolts onto the motor and drill yourself some new holes. 1" higher (in the bracket) then the originals. Heck you might even want to move the motor back an inch while you are at it, provided it won't hit your steering.

I haven't seen harrie on here for a long time either.

Stock mounts don't give much leeway up/down.

Oughta be simple to fab either some plates for the block as above, or make some completely new "arms" coming out from the frame to accept the mounts.

Looks like plates would be the best solution. Going back is a good idea, too. I think I could go an inch easily, maybe more if the trans mount will let me. What thickness stock should I use?

I'm not anywhere that I can measure a mount, but I'd suggest no thicker then the original motor mounts' metal. 3/16 or at most 1/4" (just a guess). Plus if you make it too wide you have to figure out what to do with the extra width.

If you move the motor too far you could cause issues with linkages (shifter/kickdown). Make sure you can get the trans bellhousing bolts out too. Also consider your exhaust may need to have some length taken out of it, likewise the driveline if you run out of slip yoke. So much easier to make this type of change when you are getting started. When I get around to working on my '67 Mustang I'm going to set the motor back as far as possible, I don't have a driveline yet or exhaust.
