i have a 1972 maverick with the 200 engine.. it has the stock 1 barrel carb on it.. what im wondering is, can i put the manual choke conversion kit on it from NAPA.. has anyone done this?
On the subject of chokes - do you really need one?
I have a YF on my 200 w/o any choke. I started it up the other morning and it was 26 degrees out. Two pumps, and it started RIGHT up and dropped down to idle at 500 rpm.
I mean, maybe if you live in greenland... but I'm not sure that 90% of the people on this board actually need a choke.
Why do you want to go with a manual? What do you have now and whats it doing or not doing? OE style electric is fairly easy on the fords because the control feed comes off a special terminal on the back of the alternator. I looked into converting mine to something else, even picked up a manual carb at a junkyard but ended up fixing the stock air heated one for around $30 IIRC.
I tried to put one of the kits on my 1100 and it didnt work quite right because of cable mounting issues (like Eric says in the next post). If you can work through that stuff they work but you have to treat them different than a real manual. For most carbs you have to push the gas to the floor and then pull the cable out so it can get up on the fast idle cam and such then it depends on the pull off arrangement weather or not you have to slightly open it as soon as the engine starts.
If the manual choke kit is the "HELP!" brand one it will work with a YF but you will have to get creative making a bracket to support the cable. The brackets included with the kit are meant to be used on V-engines where the carb sits low to the manifold. The YF is too tall for the bracket they give you.
I think my YF had one of those expanding metal springs in it... the kind that expand when they get hot. I never had to fool with the choke on it like others have said but I just wanted a manual choke so I would have it if I needed it.
