not sure you can have matching numbers on a ford its more of a mopar and gm thing. Generally if the motors casting number and build date are the same date as the car it is considered matching numbers.

If you want to see a Chevy guy quiver and foam at the mouth just say the words matching numbers and four bolt main.

There aren't serial numbers on Ford engines like Mopar/GM. As long as it is the correct year, nobody can say it isn't "numbers matching".

It is a huge deal with Mopar/GM though. It basically means that the car is original, not a clone. Though clones of desireable cars can still sell for big bucks.

I thought some Shelby Mustangs had their VIN stamped into the motor after 'rebuild' at the Shelby facility. And FWIW, when I had my C4 out of the '68 Mustang early this summer it had the VIN number stamped onto a cast flat spot on the passenger side of the case, right above the vacuum modulator.

But generally, so long as the casting number is older then the car (and very rarely younger) and the cast in build date is within 3-6 months most people consider that 'matching numbers' for a Ford.

I can't speak for the early-mid 60's cars, or cars later then 1980, however, from about 1969, up to about 1980, Ford did in fact stamp the engine and transmissions with the VIN.

The first two digits and last 6 digits of the car's VIN that the engine originally came out of is stamped on the engine and trans.

The engine and transmission in the picture is out of a 1974 Maverick Grabber that I own. That car's VIN is 4W93L159085. The engine and trans in the picture both have 4W159085 stamped in them in the locations circled. I have two other number matching cars also, one a '72, the other a '73, and this is the same on those cars also, the VIN's match.

All high end Mustang's, such as Bosses and Cobra Jet's, had the VIN stamped on the block and transmission. Go to any Boss or Cobra Jet forum and you'll find guys searching for their original numbers matching block to their specific car. Mercury also stamped VIN's in their engines and transmissions.
