Ok. Today I flushed out my gearbox with 10 litres of ATF. Not a pretty sight when you see the fluid coming out of the gearbox as a nice black colour. I think that had something to do with the PO putting engine oil in there. But in anycase, it left a nice coating of silver bits on the bottom of the container I used to catch the oil coming out of the coolant line. That, and a near nonexistant reverse gear leads me to believe that this trans flush will be an indian summer for this particular gearbox.

However, a mate reckons if I adjust the bands on it, it'll be right. So I'm just trying to weigh up my options here - adjust the bands, in the hope it'll hold, or just save my bikkies for a C4. What do you blokes reckon?

The oil will have rotted seals and caused glazing, if it remained in there for long. But for now a full flush and adjusting both bands will limp home.

To go C4 column shift you need a crossunder shaft. These are slightly harder to come by.

Cheers, Adam.

Get it reset using a line pressure gauge, and have the bands done. Ford's old BW40 may not have much strength in reserve, but its better than the BW 35, and should be a great stand-in untill you get a killer 4-stage auto. (preach preach  )

C4's are simply the best 3-speeders around for Fords. On a Falcon ute, where the torque is good, and the gearing is reasonably high, its all you'd need. If youre ambitions are a wild hi-po six for a drag car, then a 4-speed auto is it. T5's are okay, if you like manuals, but they aren't a World Class box loke the US T5 used behind the V8's.

Transmission, the untaped secret of the best screaming sixes.
