I have been runnung 10W30 with a quart of slick 50. I did'nt see any smoke out of the tail pipe until about a month later. I read that the specs for the 200 I6 is supposed to be 15W40. The 10W30 just seems too watered down now that its getting warmer and my oil pressure is running a bit lower. Should I change the oil to the spec grade oil? I also see smoke on start ups and after the engine is warm and you shut it off and restart. If I change to the 15W40 oil do you think it will help with the smoking?

8) it might be a good idea to run the 15w40 oil. if the smoke goes away, you are good to go. you might also run a synthetic oil and drop the slick 50 stuff.

Post where you read that...I don't think 15w-40 was even available when 200's were built...since it is a diesel oil and I seriously doubt it was ever recommended by Ford for use in those engines.

Let the oil wars begin...again.

I'm using rotella 15-40, it still has enough additives and is for diesels which specs are higher than those for gas engines, I broke my blown 200 in with it and compcams additive.

I rolled my eyes when I saw that it was an oil question too, but it seems to be a different one. I'd also be curious to know where you heard 15w40.

I usually run 10W40 but I'm trying to keep the oil consumption down as well.

Lets try and keep this conversation just about oil weight and not synthetic vs. regular or preferred brand.

The 66 shop manual says 10w-30 unless sustained temps below -10*F then 5w-20. I did not know 5w-20 was even around back then.

My theory is if you are building the engine to original specs as far as clearances and such you should still stick to the original spec for oil as far as weight. An exception may be for engines designed before multi viscosity oils were even invented.

I dont think I would run the 15-40 in a new engine, but in a typical well used one in a warm climate should be fine.
