I installed the msd 6al,78 duraspark dist, 8 mm wires, yada yada.Boy did it help the little 200 out ! trouble is that there is a noise (humming) coming from the msd box.It was placed under the dash and grounded per instructions.Anyone have the same issue? I'm calling summit tommorrow and ask ?

It's perfectly normal for MSD boxes to humm in relation to rpm.... it's just letting you know it's still ticking 8)

Ok,i guess i will have to turn up the radio a bit louder so i dont hear it.It sounds like a defroster fan running. Thanks for the info.I've never had a msd so i'm a newbie. :checks:

Hey man, are you sure its not the radio humming as well? My radio hummed with the RPMs when I installed the MSD. Might want to check that out too!
Matt

MSD will make the radio humm unless you get a noise suppression stuff from them. Happened to mine as well, and my MSD is on the front of the driver's side inner fender.

4 MSD installations, and never had a problem with radio interferance. Not that is doesn't happen, it does, but wire routing is often the key.

mine usually only occurs on extremelyl cold days in the winter...in the summer...never hear it...

Flowmasters also correct the hum. You put flows on there, you'll never hear the humm again (or anything else for that matter).

You are sending quite a bit more energy through those sparkplug wires now with the MSD, probably upwards of 40,000 volts continuous. That will create a much greater strength energy field from your plug wires and mostly from your coil wire. If you aren’t already make sure you are using a high quality, low resistance, wire wrapped silicon plug wire and maybe select a higher resistance wire wrapped coil wire also. Make sure the boots are sealed at the wire also; you would be surprised how much energy is lost at that point.

What gap are you running now with the MSD. Start at 50 thou and work your way up.

Good luck, Ric.

yeah, you are prolly triangulating a radio frequency.

I used to run wires for mobile dj...same thing if you werent careful..

once we picked up the airport tower...funny. since you dont have speakers, you might just be producing feedback thru unit.

I dont have the radio on when the hummmmmmm is present. My plugs are gapped at .45 . Will that cause the hummmm ?

I'm telling you...you need a louder exhaust to fix the problem.

Is it in an area that gets good ventilation? If not, it could be overheating causing the hum.

But, even if you radio is off, if the wires are close to the speaker wires, it can still magnetize the speaker wires some causing the hum.

Slade, the box is up under the dash in a ventilated area.I guess if anyone has thier msd box under the dash and it doesnt hum then something is not right. It is spanking new via summit. It sure helps out the 200 ! As for the flowmasters,i like my walker super turbo's ! I may have to live with the hummmmmmm or turn up the volume of my radio to say, van halen or ...... ? :D

I would suggest ZZ Top, which is much better when it’s turned up. Also the Walkers are the same design as the Dyno Max and I believe they are quietest and highest flow mufflers made. You would have to have your foot to the floor the whole time to get enough noise to do any good. It would probably be better to figure out what is going on. Is it a humming or a very fast ticking? Does the frequency of the noise change with RPM? If so that would definitely point to EMI (electro magnetic interference) created by the new system or just the discharge of the unit. The MSD is kind of a very large capacitor. Each spark that is needed the system augments the coil to provide the additional needed energy.

As far as the gap, start with a minimum of .050 and work up from there. The whole idea is to provide a high-energy spark over as large an area as possible. Increase the gap until you have a problem and back off .005.

What about the wires? What are you using? A good set of wire-wound carbon fiber wires will definitely help reduce EMI. You should be using this type of wire anyhow.

Keep it up, Ric.
