i am changing my muffler form the single in/out flowmaster 40 to a single in dual out and wanted to know if there is a difference between a 40 series and a 50 or 60 series

the 40 is too loud - does anybody run 50 or 60's

thanks

John

If I remember correctly the 40 series was a two chamber muffler. meaning it will be louder.
If I remember correctly the 60 series is much quieter than the 40. its been awhile since I've heard a 60 series though.

It really depends on what you think is loud.

Warning, 50's will decrease your mileage...

I'm running dual 50s and hate it the majority of the time. The only times I don't is at idle where it sounds awesome, and WOT where it sounds like a bat out of hell. I've scared V-8 guys with it. Everytime I step on the gas, I grin because of the sound. My wife makes fun of me for it. That's why my mileage goes down.

But for cruising around town, it's pretty loud. Not obnoxious or anything, just loud and people are going to hear you. They have the typical flowmaster drove at 2000 RPM, just not as loud as 40s.

gotta61comet can comment on how they sound. Hopefully Big Al will be able too soon as well.

Oh...at 70MPH you can't hear them in the car at all. They like disappear except for a nice low, barely audible sound.

Ive got 50's and if you read ANY other posts on mufflers you will know hos much I LOVe them. After looking back at my posts I guess you could call me Flowmaster's "Unofficial Spokesperson" lol. I love the drone at 2,000rpm, its my favorite tone if you ask me. The difference between 40 and 50 series is the interior noise. 40's are loud all over where 50's are quiet if you roll the windows up. No joke, you cant hear a thing with the windows up, which I hate, lol. I dont like driving the stang when I cant hear the exhaust.

Hehe...yeah, I know you love yours Matt! I had 40's on my 64 F100 Y-Block and MAN did it sound freaking amazing! Do you have the original 40's or the Deltas? If the only difference is INTERIOR noise between the 40's and 50's then I guess i should stick with the 40's since my car is a convertible and the top is always down! My interior is my exterior!

I'm leaning toward the 40's Deltas

Im not really sure which ones I have, we got them off another car that bottomed out his ground effects and decided it would be cheaper to get new mufflers that go straight out the back than to get new effects and paint them. I cant wait to get the stang back and get a sound clip, maybe this weekend!!!

John,

Unfortunately I can't compare to a 40, 50 or 60 series....didn't even know you could get these in a crossflow configuration. But I do have the 80 series single in/dual out and have been very pleased with how nice it sounds. It carries a nice rumble at idle and sounds respectable all the way to WOT. It's not too loud or obnoxious, but it definately turns the heads of those with oil in their blood. I picked mine up through performance peddler on ebay for about $80 and have been extremely happy. It's got it hooked up to a relatively stock 200 with a Genie header and 2 1/4" pipes. PM me and I'll see about getting a sound clip if interested.

Adios,
Jay

I have a 40 series delta flow
On my 94 lightining. it sounds awesome out side the truck.
Not too loud inside the truck either. till you get to the drone which happens at 70 mph to 75 or 2500 to 2800 rpms...
Then its so loud its annoying.
I only have the one muffler with a 3" in and 3"out.
I also had a pair on my 66 mustang with a vee-eight..
I had turn downs before the rear axle biggest misyake i ever made.
I couldnt wait to get it back to the muffler shop to have them run it over the axle...
It was still loud. mostly at cruising speed..

I have a single in/out 40's with the delta flow and the drone inside with the window's up is bad. I can't tell at what rpm it is at cause i don't have a tachometer, but it is at cruising speed. It is very loud and i don't like it so i find myself speeding up and slowing down all the time.

i do love the idle and WOT sound however. i think i will try the 50 series single in/dual out and if that doen't do it i may add a resonator. I like the sound clip of the PT cruiser onthe flowmaster site with the 50's and a res.

if anybody is interested i will sell my 40 series cheap

thanks
John

I hate the drone at 2000 RPM. the rest is okay.

I know that I can hear my 50s in the interior. Now that may be a function of the drop top, but you can definitely hear them even with the windows up and the top up. And I even have sound insulation on all the floor boards and the trunk.

Now, they aren't ear piercing or hurt your ears...personally, just not quite what I was looking for. They do have a nice sound...just a few decibels louding at around town cruising then I'd like. But then again...idle and WOT I love so I still have the mufflers. I'm going to give them a run at the turbo and see how they sound then before I go swapping things.

The 50 is a 3 chamber thus the 40 is a 2 chamber. What size pipes are you running. I have a single in dual out 40s flow master sounds great not to loud on the inside but nice stong and deep on the outside.
