my 144 and duraspark

I have a low milage 144 in my falcon I'm building. and I was looking at my duaspark distributor. the only difference I can see is that the oil pump shaft is larger on the duraspark. so I was wondering if there is any reason I can't bore the hole in my block and buy a late model oil pump to get the advantages of the electronic dizzy. I am building this car for maxium economy and building it as low cost as possible so I really rather not go to a later 170. also if I go to a duraspark will my 144 carb work with the vacume tap plugged off? Thanx

Don't bore the block, reduce the pilot on the DS-II shaft. Easier!

The DS2 is an excellent choice. If you are REALLY into low budget high performance check out www.gofastforless.com for some clever ideas. One option includes keeping your breaker point distributor and using it to trigger an electronic ignition module. There are several types that will work, and your points will last practically forever as they don't have to carry full current like they do in the stock ignition.

Turning down the shaft was my first thought but, the problem with that is the oil pump is a hex shaft and slids internally into the dizzy shaft. i won't be able to get out to the car for a few weeks but i did get the chance to measure out a couple of things and think it may be possible to use the shaft out of the old dizzy with bushings in the dura spark housing.

Yes, all you need to do is reduce the shaft diameter below the gear to 0.490", from 0.530". Use a later (5/16") drive shaft and the later pump.

People who combine dizzies (more common down here) TIG-weld the old shaft where it meets the base of the breaker plate. This requires some lathe work and a little stub of the original shaft left, to centre a hole bored into the donor shaft tip. If you do go this route and rebush, fit an upper bush, too.

Cheers, Adam.
