first its hard to get to fire, it turns and turns, eventually it will. then it stalls out ALOT, usually when sitting or pulling away from at light it ill drive all day at 60+mph. the carb was rebuilt from the previous owner and i put in a new fule pump, oil filter, plugs and oil change. I think the problem is the disconnect and pluged up vac lines. does anyone have a diagram or pic of how they should look on a 76 250 maverick so i can hook 'em up right?

"simon" might have an idea. You can bypass a lot of them. It sounds as though the effective timing is a long way off. Have you checked the spark is a good big blue one at the plugs?

The spark, if healthy, should be a rich bright blue, not orange or yellow. A duff module or blown coil will produce a feeble looking orange spark.

The other thing, is never trust your plugs to be gapped right, out of the box. Many are undergapped and will close with a little fouling. If you have Duraspark, then 50 thou should be fine.

To test the basic spark, unplug the coil lead where it sockets into the dizzy cap. Pull back the boot, and lay the exposed lead tip near the motor (about ¼" away) and have a friend crank the car. You should observe this spark jumping nicely from the end of your lead, to the block.

Ford had eleven different exhaust emission setups for the 250 Maverick in 1976.
Can you tell me the calibration and revision number (its on the sticker on the valve cover)? If thats gone, what is left of the original smog equipment on your car? manual or auto transmission? AC?

According to the Delaware DMV your '76 Mav is not smog exempt and has to pass the idle emissions sniffer test. I don´t know how picky the officials are in your particular county. You might have to keep some of the smog equipment to pass the sniffer test, and maybe all of it to pass a visual inspection.

passed the sniff no problem when I reneded the tags about a mounth ago. as far as smog equiptment there is a cat on the simgle exhaust and thats it no air pumps or anything. it is a non ac car with an automatic trans.
