My I6 200ci dual exhaust video clips

These are clips of my 1965 Mustang. It has a 1968 200ci I6, Holley 2bbl carburetor, dual outlet header from Ford Six Performance, and dual exhaust with straight pipes and Borla ProXS mufflers. Here is a clip:

Current Exhaust

I have been thinking about installing Cherry Bomb glasspacks and side exit exhaust to see how it sounds on a modified I6. I started to remove the exhaust today (it is set up so the exhaust can be easily removed without cutting) and recorded the open header:

Open Split Manifold Header

A friend let me borrow some worn out Cherry Bomb glasspacks:

Cherry Bombs!

The open header sounds cool (of course). I love the sound of the Borla mufflers. I think they really give the I6 a mean sound. I've had guys mistake it for a V8. My intention is not to fool anyone, but it is a nice compliment.

The glasspacks sound ok, but I don't like them over the Borlas. However, these were pretty beat up. The packing was burned out a long time ago. I'm still considering trying a pair of new 8" glasspacks.

Pretty good for a six cylinder...let me know what you think!

I really like the 30 year old Cherry Bomb glasspack with a stock exhaust system on my 1965 Mustang 200 six. I think it sounds pretty tough... definitely doesn't sound like a six cylinder to me.

My Cherry Bomb is 16" long, 3" wide with a 2.25" inlet and outlet. Size probably changes the type of sound you get.

The glasspacks make it sound like the Mustang cruising around ominously before the rumble in 'The Outsiders'.

I vote glasspacks.

I'm very happy with the Borla mufflers. I thought I could put together a side exit exhaust system with 8" glasspacks pretty cheaply, but I was wrong. The parts list quickly added up to $200! I'm scrapping the idea for now since I love the sound of the Borlas.

agreed, borla's are the way to go, glasspacks sound cool at idle, but once you get crusin' you can't hear your radio anymore

Hey Dude,
Realize this is a pretty old thread, but curious about your Borla setup. I see you have a 2bbl, do you have a cam upgrade as well?
EDIT: What size pipe did you run off the dual outlet headers? Which Borla mufflers did you go with?
Looking at the Borla catalog, I think I was confusing XS & XL.
I 'had' a Borla 'turbo' before a road hazard took it out...

I miss it cause it just had a deeper, richer tone than the generic muffler shop turbo I have now (don't like it as much). May be re-doing my exhaust so I'm curious about which 'model' of Borla muffler you used. If you happen to remember the model number that would be great (mine was the 40651...one of the more affordably priced).

Really like the sound of your dual borla-xs setup 8) and would like to end up with something similar...thanks in advance for any insight you can offer

I haven't v isited this board too much lately, but I thought I'd check it quick, so it's funny this thread popped up.

I purchased Borla ProXS mufflers. I will have to check the inlet and outlet size, but I think I got it to match the the outlet diameter of the original long tube FSPP header.

I'll get back to you and let you know more detailed information about the setup. There are definitely things I would have done differently than what the shop did, but I was younger and newer to cars at the time.

Thanks! I'd appreciate any bits of info, thoughts as well as reflections on how you set it up and what you'd do different. I'm guessing you might have a mild cam with the 2bbl, but can't quite tell. If you don't then it gives me some hope for acheiving similar sound.

Just knowing you have the orig FSPP long tube header helps. Dont' think I'll get the same tones from shortys. I'm debating going with the short tube stainless not as much for power as for aesthics and acoustics...I know   ...gotta admit I've always been a sucker for the look of the GT exhaust through valance. Not interested in a full faux GT just dig the exhaust look 8) ..it's as much for the 'sizzle' and decided if I'm modding her to my tastes...might as well do exactly what I want.

I think the orig. dual gt's were 1-7/8"...not sure. So I'm trying to decide on 1-7/8", 2, 2-1/4". I think 2-1/4" would be a bit overkill for my 1bbl setup, but I want to end up with more rumble than rice sound if I can with this mostly stock setup. There may be a mild cam upgrade in my future, but haven't decided. Seems the gt trumpets are intended for the 1-7/8" duals (although there are some larger 2" trumpets available...might just end up with straight ss tips instead of louverd trumpets)...so knowing your pipe setup would just fill in more blanks for me and be greatly appreciated

So anyway...still surveying options, and really like the sound of those dual borlas, not expecting any super notable hp gains as mentioned, but of course every bit of efficiency gained helps...at least I don't think they can hurt. Just don't want to end up with it sounding like a honda (a little to closee to what it sounds like now).

I'd do at least 2"

I have 2" or 2 1/4" pipe on my stock 1bbl setup, can't remember which

Allows it to breathe better.

The only mods I have done to the engine are a 2bbl carburetor, port divider and the exhaust. I will try to get measurements on the pipes soon.

I would have liked to have seen some kind of X or H pipe incorporated into the system instead of straight pipes.

Thanks TheDude! That give me even more hope for a decent exhaust note...and I'm in no hurry on the pipe measure but would be nice to know what you ended up using. So you wish you used an X or H pipe? Do you get highway drone or too much buzzing at higher rpm's? or just prefer it to straight?

The extensions on the shorty ss header are 2" IIRC so it may make sense to go with that, but as Canary94GT's said...probably will use either 2 or 2.25 (would also be good just in case there is a mild cam in my future). I don't think 2.25" would necessarily be overkill with stock cam and 200cfm 1bbl...somewhat based on this compilation of clips...

I think the first vid is junk-falcon (2.25 duals I think, and guessing stock...maybe 2bbl)...the other clips give a decent variety . Anyway if there were one additional sticky I'd wish for in this situation it would be one with sound/video clips and engine specs
But between youtube and some searching, I've found a few samples (engine specs..are sometimes lacking info), but it's all very helpful. Gotta say so far, I still prefer the sound of those borlas, seem to have the rumble without the 'blat, blat, blat...I either 'must be getting too old, cause some are too loud' or I might be an exhaust snob  Thanks again!
